{"id":558466,"date":"2022-02-15T10:03:43","date_gmt":"2022-02-15T08:03:43","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/?p=558466"},"modified":"2022-02-15T10:03:43","modified_gmt":"2022-02-15T08:03:43","slug":"new-speed-limits-proposed-for-south-africa","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/motoring\/558466\/new-speed-limits-proposed-for-south-africa\/","title":{"rendered":"New speed limits proposed for South Africa"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Road Traffic Management Corporation is promoting a number of interventions to reduce the number of fatalities on South Africa&#8217;s roads &#8211; including speed limit changes.<\/p>\n<p>Presenting to parliament on Tuesday (15 February), the corporation said a programme is currently underway to reduce the speed in urban areas, particularly around schools and routes that cyclists frequent.<\/p>\n<p>An accompanying presentation indicated that the speed limit should be reduced from 60km\/h to 50km\/h on urban roads, and from 120km\/h to 110km\/h on major roads.<\/p>\n<p>This is in line with a recommendation made by the United Nations that countries of the world should look at reducing speed by 10km\/h to reduce the number of fatalities, RTMC chief communication officer Simon Zwane said.<\/p>\n<p>Speaking to BusinessTech, Zwane said that as a member of the UN&#8217;s roads council, this decision was binding for South Africa and the government is promoting the lower limit. However, he noted that authorities have not yet begun a formal process to change the regulations.<\/p>\n<p><a  data-lightbox=\"post-image\" href=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/RTMC.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-558476 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/RTMC.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"937\" height=\"442\" srcset=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/RTMC.png 1877w, https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/RTMC-300x141.png 300w, https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/RTMC-1024x483.png 1024w, https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/RTMC-768x362.png 768w, https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/RTMC-1536x724.png 1536w, https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/RTMC-1200x566.png 1200w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 937px) 100vw, 937px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The United Nations has called on policymakers to act for low-speed streets worldwide, limiting speeds to 30km\/h (20mph) where people walk, live and play.<\/p>\n<p>The Department of Transport and the Road Traffic Management Corporation (RTMC) has previously looked at a proposal to <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/motoring\/352811\/south-africa-is-looking-to-introduce-new-speed-limits\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">review\u00a0<\/a><\/strong>speed limits in South Africa, with a particular focus on the country\u2019s highways.<\/p>\n<p>This proposal would see the baseline top speeds across the country\u2019s roads reduced by 20km\/h.<\/p>\n<p>It would also effectively drop the speed limit on the country\u2019s highways from 120km\/h to 100km\/h, while the top speeds on main roads would drop from 100km\/h to 80km\/h.
