{"id":55877,"date":"2014-04-18T02:06:25","date_gmt":"2014-04-18T00:06:25","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/?p=55877"},"modified":"2014-04-18T02:06:25","modified_gmt":"2014-04-18T00:06:25","slug":"mtn-hits-cell-c-right-where-it-hurts","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/business-opinion\/55877\/mtn-hits-cell-c-right-where-it-hurts\/","title":{"rendered":"MTN hits Cell C right where it hurts"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>MTN\u2019s decision to launch a flat prepaid call rate of 79c per minute will place pressure on Cell C to follow suit \u2013 removing the financial benefit of lower termination rates to the smaller operator.<\/p>\n<p>It is well known that Cell C is under financial pressure; in March 2014 the company said that its <a title=\"Cell C repay debt and termination rates\" href=\"http:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/cellular\/99462-cell-c-could-be-in-deep-deep-trouble-report.html\"><strong>ability to pay back its debt could be under threat<\/strong><\/a> if the new call termination regulations are not implemented.<\/p>\n<p>Cell C added that stopping the implementation of the regulations will also limit its network investment and negatively impact its ability to improve its customer care services.<\/p>\n<p><a title=\"Cell C warns of higher prices\" href=\"http:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/cellular\/99574-cell-c-warns-of-higher-prices-network-concerns.html\"><strong>Cell C said that the only real alternative,<\/strong><\/a> if the 2014 regulations do not come into effect, will be for the company to increase retail rates.<\/p>\n<p>Despite the implementation of the new termination rates, Cell C is still increasing prices. On 1 May 2014 Cell C will be increasing its out of bundle data rates by 560% (from 15c per MB to 99c per MB) \u2013 a sign that the company needs to increase revenue.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"my-4\">MTN strikes at the heart of Cell C<\/h3>\n<p>When the new termination rates were unveiled in January 2014, <a title=\"Cell C will not cut rates immediately\" href=\"http:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/telecoms\/95796-new-termination-rates-will-you-see-lower-prices.html\"><strong>Cell C CFO Robert Pasley said that<\/strong><\/a> \u201cCell C\u2019s rates are already very competitive, so consumers shouldn\u2019t expect dramatic price reductions\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Pasley indicated that Cell C was looking to benefit financially from the lower termination rates. MTN\u2019s new rates may remove this luxury.<\/p>\n<p>MTN\u2019s decision to reduce its prepaid call rates to 79c per minute means Cell C is under pressure to do the same to maintain its \u2018consumer champion\u2019 image.<\/p>\n<p>Consumers also have a right to expect a price cut from Cell C. <a title=\"Vodacom, MTN preventing real price reductions\" href=\"http:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/cellular\/99378-vodacom-mtn-preventing-drastic-price-cuts-cell-c.html\"><strong>In March 2014 Cell C said<\/strong><\/a> that it will be able to drop its cellphone call rates from the current 99c per minute to 79c per minute if the new mobile termination rates (MTR) are implemented \u2013 which has happened.<\/p>\n<p>If Cell C reduces its call rates to 79c per minute, it sacrifices the financial benefit of lower MTRs for off-net calls. Without more money flowing into the company\u2019s coffers, the situation is unlikely to get better.<\/p>\n<p>MTN is now twisting the knife it put into Cell C in its latest ad campaign.
