determinations for workers in South Africa&#8217;s wholesale and retail sectors.<\/p>\n<p>The changes take effect from 1 March 2022 alongside recent changes to South Africa&#8217;s <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/finance\/556460\/new-minimum-wage-announced-for-south-africa\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">minimum wage<\/a><\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>These wages establish the minimum baseline across the sector and workers can earn significantly more based on their position and the company that they work for.<\/p>\n<p>Workers are also paid in accordance with a growing gap between the highest and lowest-paid workers.<\/p>\n<p>To remedy this, retail groups have announced initiatives to close the wage gap, while the government plans to introduce new <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/finance\/524776\/new-law-to-force-south-african-companies-to-report-pay-differences-between-executives-and-workers\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">legislation<\/a> <\/strong>to force South African companies to report pay differences between executives and workers.<\/p>\n<p>In October, Woolworths detailed its <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/business\/525492\/woolworths-reveals-minimum-salary-data\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u2018Just Wage\u2019 initiative<\/a><\/strong>, which will see it steadily increase worker wages in the coming years as part of a move to close its remuneration gap.<\/p>\n<p>Data provided by the group shows that South Africa\u2019s retail sector minimum wage as of 1 March 2021 was around\u00a0<strong>R28.25 an hour<\/strong>. By comparison, Woolworths said that its base pay as of 1 April 2021 was\u00a0<strong>R33.40 an hour<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>The group said it now plans to increase this base pay to a target of\u00a0<strong>R41.25<\/strong>\u00a0an hour by 2023, which will require an additional R120 million investment. This is well above the country\u2019s minimum wage, which is currently set at R21.69.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLast year, the Woolworths South Africa\u2019s (WSA) base pay was 47% higher than the South African minimum wage rate and 13% above that of the retail sector.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTo further accelerate the improvement in the lives of WSA store-based employees, we will invest an additional R120 million over a three-year period to adjust WSA\u2019s hourly base pay from R33.40 to R41.25 in 2023 \u2013 a 23.5% increase.
