and science fiction thriller <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.showmax.com\/eng\/movie\/98m3v37m-glasshouse?utm_source=BusinessTech&amp;utm_medium=Article&amp;utm_term=February+2022\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Glasshouse<\/a><\/strong> was made right here in South Africa.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s set after The Shred, an airborne virus that causes dementia, has left most humans roaming like lost and dangerous animals, unable to remember who they are.<\/p>\n<p>Confined to their airtight glasshouse, a family does what they must to survive &#8211; until the sisters are seduced by a stranger who upsets the family\u2019s rituals, unearthing a past they have tried to bury.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"YouTube video player\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/GHBHEh4s1NA\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/stories.showmax.com\/glasshouse-2020\/?utm_source=BusinessTech&amp;utm_medium=Article&amp;utm_term=February+2022\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Glasshouse<\/a><\/strong> had its world premiere at the 25th Fantasia International Film Festival in Montreal, Canada in August 2021, receiving multiple five-star reviews and an 89% critics\u2019 rating on Rotten Tomatoes.<\/p>\n<p>The Guardian gave it four stars, calling it \u201ca sinister, seductive meditation on memory, desire and loss&#8221;; Film Threat\u2019s Lorry Kitka singled it out as her \u201cfavourite film of the year so far\u201d; Exclaim proclaimed, \u201cKelsey Egan is a filmmaker to keep an eye on\u201d and Pop Culture Planet included Jessica Alexander (who also stars in the upcoming remake of The Little Mermaid) in their list of the Best Performances of 2021, in good company alongside the likes of Jennifer Coolidge in <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.showmax.com\/eng\/tvseries\/u2h3ff0r-the-white-lotus?utm_source=BusinessTech&amp;utm_medium=Article&amp;utm_term=February+2022\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The White Lotus.<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Glasshouse stars Alexander and critically acclaimed newcomer Anja Taljaard as the sisters, Bee and Evie, opposite Hilton Pelser (the BAFTA-nominated <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.showmax.com\/eng\/movie\/bu8qibur-moffie?utm_source=BusinessTech&amp;utm_medium=Article&amp;utm_term=February+2022\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Moffie<\/a><\/strong>, the upcoming remake of Dangerous Liaisons) as The Stranger.<\/p>\n<p>Film and theatre veteran Adrienne Pearce (the BAFTA-winning Troy and the Emmy-winning The Triangle); child star, Naledi Award winner and Fleur du Cap nominee Kitty Harris (Matilda the Musical); and rising star Brent Vermeulen (<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.showmax.com\/eng\/movie\/l6mw6al4-die-stropers?utm_source=BusinessTech&amp;utm_medium=Article&amp;utm_term=February+2022\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Die Stropers<\/a><\/strong>, <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.showmax.com\/eng\/movie\/8kue39vl-griekwastad?utm_source=BusinessTech&amp;utm_medium=Article&amp;utm_term=February+2022\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Griekwastad<\/a><\/strong>) co-star.<\/p>\n<p>Glasshouse is the first film in a three-part post-apocalyptic slate being developed by Showmax with Local Motion Pictures, in association with Crave Pictures, with Kelsey Egan directing and sharing story credits with associate producer Emma Lungiswa de Wet.<\/p>\n<p>Greig Buckle, co-producer of the Oscar-shortlisted Life, Above All and line producer of the #1 US box office hit Chronicle, is the producer.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"my-4\">Awakening in a strange world<\/h3>\n<p>Mr Johnson, starring the legendary Paul Slabolepszy, is another recent South African movie well worth the watch.<\/p>\n<p>A 73-year-old man awakes from a 47 year coma to find that his life, and the world, has passed him by.<\/p>\n<p>In what seems like a moment, he goes from being 26 and in love, to being aged and infirm and completely out of place.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"YouTube video player\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/DsstmCBb5SY\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><span data-mce-type=\"bookmark\" style=\"display: inline-block; width: 0px; overflow: hidden; line-height: 0;\" class=\"mce_SELRES_start\">\ufeff<\/span><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>He decides to track down his sweetheart &#8211; but first he has to learn to use the internet and to navigate the digital age.<\/p>\n<p>Directed by William Collinson, the film also stars Jana Cilliers, Graham Hopkins and Sisanda Henna, among others.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"my-4\">The late, great Mary Twala lights up the screen<\/h3>\n<p>This one might not be quite South Africa &#8211; it was made in Lesotho &#8211; but it deserves every mention it can get.<\/p>\n<p>Scoring 100% on Rotten Tomatoes and 91% on Metacritic, it was number five on Metacritic\u2019s international list of the best films of 2021.<\/p>\n<p>Vulture called it \u201cthe first masterpiece of 2021\u2026 I recommend seeing it more than once: luckily, it\u2019s so gorgeous and spellbinding that it invites repeat viewings.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"YouTube video player\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/kBAfSS7ux3o\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Writer-director Lemohang Jeremiah Mosese is a self-taught filmmaker whose drive and inspiration powers this inventive, original and layered drama.<\/p>\n<p>Mantoa is an 80 year-old widow who is ready to die &#8211; Bohlokwa Mpiti stars as a blind outcast with a rare gift in the isiZulu drama <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.showmax.com\/eng\/movie\/2gsg01eh-umnisamvula?utm_source=BusinessTech&amp;utm_medium=Article&amp;utm_term=February+2022\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Umnisamvula<\/a><\/strong>;
