Buyers are continuing to avoid Russian crude as they try and navigate financial sanctions on Russia, and traders are betting prices will keep rising. Despite the turmoil, OPEC+ is sitting on the sidelines.<\/p>\n<p>The group stuck with the 400,000 barrel-a-day production increase that was scheduled for April and wrapped up a Wednesday meeting in record time of just 13 minutes, delegates said. Mexican Energy Minister Rocio Nahle tried to raise the subject of Russia, but other members of the coalition led by Saudi Arabia swiftly moved on to other matters without any discussion, they said.<\/p>\n<p><a  data-lightbox=\"post-image\" href=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/OilPrice.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-564396\" src=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/OilPrice.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"814\" height=\"457\" srcset=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/OilPrice.jpg 814w, https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/OilPrice-300x168.jpg 300w, https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/OilPrice-768x431.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 814px) 100vw, 814px\" \/><\/a><br \/>\nThe International Energy Agency has warned that global energy security was under threat and a planned emergency release of crude reserves by the U.S. and others has done little to quell market fears. Surgutneftegas PJSC failed to sell any of the Russian crude it was offering for a third time.<\/p>\n<p>The US and its allies have so far refrained from sanctioning Russia\u2019s crude exports due to concerns about the impact of rising energy prices on consumers, but trade is seizing up as banks pull financing and shipping costs spike. Even before the invasion, American retail gasoline was at its highest since 2014.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere are real fears of a supply squeeze,\u201d said Kim Kwangrae, a Seoul-based senior commodities analyst at Samsung Futures Inc. \u201cIf the situation in Ukraine deteriorates, then we\u2019re looking at another rally.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Prices:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>West Texas Intermediate for April delivery rose 3.3% to $114.25 a barrel on the New York Mercantile Exchange at 1:20 p.m. in Singapore after surging 7% on Wednesday.<\/li>\n<li>Brent for May settlement gained 3.7% to $117.09 a barrel on the ICE Futures Europe exchange.<\/li>\n<li>Nymex gasoline futures rose as much as 4.4% to $3.4551 a gallon, the highest level since 2011.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Brent remains in deep backwardation, a bullish structure where prompt barrels are more expensive than later-dated cargoes, indicating nervousness over tightening supply. The benchmark\u2019s prompt spread was $5.27 a barrel, compared with $1.39 at the start of last month.<\/p>\n<p>The Biden administration said Wednesday it is seeking to degrade Russia\u2019s status as a leading producer of oil and natural gas by restricting exports of technology related to the energy sector. The world\u2019s oil majors including BP Plc, Shell Plc and Exxon Mobil Corp. have also pledged to exit Russia.<\/p>\n<p>Separately, the Energy Information Administration reported that US crude stockpiles fell by 2.6 million barrels last week.
