{"id":56717,"date":"2014-05-02T12:00:08","date_gmt":"2014-05-02T10:00:08","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/?p=56717"},"modified":"2014-05-02T12:00:08","modified_gmt":"2014-05-02T10:00:08","slug":"da-proposes-new-ministerial-handbook-for-gauteng","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/government\/56717\/da-proposes-new-ministerial-handbook-for-gauteng\/","title":{"rendered":"DA proposes new ministerial handbook for Gauteng"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Democratic Alliance (DA) has proposed a new ministerial handbook for Gauteng, which the party says will cut out all luxuries and abuse of public funds, including the banning of government credit cards.<\/p>\n<p>The new handbook is part of a broader strategy to end the abuse that causes R6 billion of public funds to be lost to wasteful and irregular expenditure every year in Gauteng, the DA said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;One of our first acts in provincial government will be to pass this new handbook in line with our policy to cut corruption and create jobs in Gauteng,&#8221; the political party said.<\/p>\n<p>Further measures include opening tender adjudication committees to the public, passing a law to prevent civil servants from doing business in the state, and a strict policy of not allowing anyone convicted of corruption to hold public office.<\/p>\n<p>The new Handbook would implement the following structures:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Ban government credit cards;<\/li>\n<li>Ban the use of 5 star hotels for overnight stays;<\/li>\n<li>Ban all cabinet members from involvement in entities doing business with the state;<\/li>\n<li>Slash the allowed cost of Official Vehicles from 70% to 40% of a Member\u2019s salary;<\/li>\n<li>Limit flights less than 8 hours to economy class for all Members;<\/li>\n<li>Limit all car rentals to D class vehicles;<\/li>\n<li>Implement strict provisions for basic security upgrades.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The DA said that under current premier Nomvula Mokonyane, Gauteng has seen the immense abuse of state resources.<\/p>\n<p>This included:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>R1.2 million spent on new furniture for the official premier\u2019s residence in Bryanston and R574 000 on repairs to the swimming pool;<\/li>\n<li>R238 000\u00a0 spent on hired cars over the last 3 years.
