Commodity prices have soared, boosting the Johannesburg stock market and the local currency.<\/p>\n<p>The rand, typically a casualty in times of fragile sentiment, is set to end the quarter more than 10% stronger against the greenback, its strongest start to the year since Bloomberg began tracking the pair in 1993.<\/p>\n<p>That performance ranks it among the top two in emerging markets and in the top four globally.<\/p>\n<p><a  data-lightbox=\"post-image\" href=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/Bloomberg-4.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-573070\" src=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/Bloomberg-4.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"814\" height=\"457\" srcset=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/Bloomberg-4.jpg 814w, https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/Bloomberg-4-300x168.jpg 300w, https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/Bloomberg-4-768x431.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 814px) 100vw, 814px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Africa\u2019s most industrialized economy attracted investors during the first quarter because of the surge in commodity prices and its distance from the conflict in Europe, said Lester Davids, a strategist at Unum Capital in Johannesburg.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHigher commodity prices have benefited South Africa\u2019s trade balance, and the geopolitical tensions have seen funds flow out of Russia and into other parts of emerging markets, with South Africa also being a beneficiary of the re-allocation,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Here\u2019s are how other assets have fared:<\/p>\n<p><strong>Appealing Equities<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>As of Wednesday\u2019s close, South Africa\u2019s benchmark stock index had advanced 12% in dollar terms, its best three-month performance since December 2020 and the strongest first-quarter in 16 years.<\/p>\n<p>Gold miners have been among the biggest contributors to the gains as Russia\u2019s invasion of Ukraine spurred demand for bullion.
