More than 8 million people made use of Vodacom\u2019s 1GB of free data on 11 May 2014, which the company gave to all its subscribers as part of its twentieth birthday celebration.<\/p>\n
Vodacom said that they set a new network record with throughput peaking at 29 Gigabits per second, 20% higher than anything they had seen before.<\/p>\n
The operator said that data traffic was as much as 150% higher than normal in high-demand areas.<\/p>\n
On Sunday many people complained about poor speeds and connectivity issues, and Vodacom said that they learned from this experience.<\/p>\n
\u201cIn terms of network capacity this highlights the need to balance price reductions with increased capacity,\u201d said Vodacom.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe\u2019ve already announced that we intend to spend around R9 billion on our network in South Africa during the current financial year, an increase of roughly 30% on last year.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cIt\u2019s exactly this investment that allows us to increase capacity and at the same time continue to bring data prices down,\u201d Vodacom said.<\/p>\n
