{"id":576876,"date":"2022-04-12T12:05:48","date_gmt":"2022-04-12T10:05:48","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/?p=576876"},"modified":"2022-04-12T12:05:48","modified_gmt":"2022-04-12T10:05:48","slug":"key-highways-closed-in-south-africa-due-to-flooding","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/motoring\/576876\/key-highways-closed-in-south-africa-due-to-flooding\/","title":{"rendered":"Key highways closed in South Africa due to flooding"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Key highways linking South Africa\u2019s biggest port to the commercial hub of Johannesburg and its eastern seaboard were closed as severe flooding hit the province of KwaZulu-Natal.<\/p>\n<p>The so-called N3 highway that connects Johannesburg to the port of Durban has been closed to southbound traffic because of debris on the road caused by the floods, KwaZulu-Natal\u2019s Transport Department said on <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/KZNTransport\/status\/1513745508786913281?s=20&amp;t=CCZlYiTZq1lbG1tI1cso-g\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Twitter<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Bridges on the N2, the main highway along the nation\u2019s Indian Ocean coastline, have been washed away, Parboo Sewpersad, a spokesman for eThekwini Metropolitan police, said on Durban-based East Coast Radio.<\/p>\n<p>At least 20 people may have been killed because of the flooding, Johannesburg-based broadcaster eNCA reported. Local media reports showed videos and images of A.P. Moller-Maersk A\/S-labeled shipping containers adrift in the water.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe inclement weather conditions are expected to continue today\u201d in areas around eThekwini municipality, which includes the city of Durban, KwaZulu-Natal\u2019s Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs department said in a statement. \u201cThis increases the risk of flooding getting worse in all these areas.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>South Africa is this year experiencing the La Nina weather phenomenon, which usually causes above normal rainfall in the country and its neighbors.
