Varying fuel consumption, high petrol prices and constant vehicle finance repayment terms have led to South African motorists seeking affordability when deciding what car to buy, says Lebogang Gaoaketse, WesBank Motor’s head of marketing and communication<\/p>\n

New brands have emerged with a focus on more affordable models and the introduction of many new entry-level options from established brands, said Goaketse.<\/p>\n

Consumers have spent more on average for new and used vehicles in 2021, which is likely to continue into 2022.<\/p>\n

In March 2022, the average for a new vehicle financed through WesBank was R368,615 compared to two years ago when it cost R356,343, said Goaketse.<\/p>\n

Economy cars such as the Suzuki S-Presso, which starts from R152,900, come with a compact 1.0l engine offering fuel efficiency of 4.9l\/100km and low CO2 emissions of 118g\/km, said Suzuki Auto.<\/p>\n

With a 27-litre fuel tank, to fill up the S-Presso with 95 unleaded costs roughly R592,92.<\/p>\n

Driving a car with a 45-litre tank costs close to R988 to fill up with 95 unleaded.<\/p>\n

Owners of bakkies or large SUVs with 80-litre tank sizes face the possibility of paying R1,756 to fill up with 95 unleaded and R1,680 for 0.05% diesel.<\/p>\n
