{"id":578300,"date":"2022-04-19T12:48:28","date_gmt":"2022-04-19T10:48:28","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/?p=578300"},"modified":"2022-04-19T15:48:37","modified_gmt":"2022-04-19T13:48:37","slug":"here-are-the-winter-load-shedding-forecasts-for-south-africa-including-the-extreme-scenario","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/energy\/578300\/here-are-the-winter-load-shedding-forecasts-for-south-africa-including-the-extreme-scenario\/","title":{"rendered":"Here are the winter load shedding forecasts for South Africa &#8211; including the extreme scenario"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Eskom has updated its load shedding forecasts for South Africa&#8217;s winter months, with the power utility warning that outages are likely to continue unless it can manage unplanned outages.<\/p>\n<p>In a media briefing on Tuesday (19 April), Eskom laid out three scenarios:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>In the best case, Eskom said that if it can keep unplanned outages below 12,500MW then there will be<strong> zero days of load shedding<\/strong> in the coming months.<\/li>\n<li>A medium-case scenario would see the country face <strong>seven days of load shedding<\/strong>,<\/li>\n<li>In an <strong>extreme scenario,<\/strong> the country would see<strong> 101 days of load shedding<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Eskom chief executive Andre De Ruyter said the power utility was currently sitting at total unplanned outages of 15,672MW \u2013 which is \u2018unacceptably high\u2019 and has led to the implementation of stage 4 load shedding.<\/p>\n<p>He added that a significant shortfall is expected this evening, leaving Eskom with no alternative but to shed about 4,000MW of demand to safely navigate the current demand on the system to prevent total collapse.<\/p>\n<p>In the short term, Eskom said the best-case scenario is that load shedding will be stopped sometime on Friday.
