No decision has been taken to introduce the e-tolling system in KwaZulu-Natal, the transport ministry said on Friday.<\/p>\n
“Any decision to introduce any form of tolling in any part of the country will be taken in consultation with authorities,” said Transport Minister Dipuo Peters in a statement.<\/p>\n
The decision could only be taken after consultation with affected parties.<\/p>\n
“I therefore wish to clarify reports that a decision has been taken to introduce electronic tolling in some parts of KwaZulu-Natal as untrue.”<\/p>\n
She said although the country needed to resolve the current road infrastructure backlog, it was important to consult thoroughly with potentially affected parties.<\/p>\n
“We are currently focused on resolving some of the challenges emanating from the introduction of electronic tolling in some parts of the Gauteng province.”<\/p>\n
On Wednesday, the SA National Roads Agency Limited (Sanral) revealed that the province was set to have e-tolling on the N2 and the N3 by November.<\/p>\n
Unlike in Gauteng it would not be an additional toll but simply an alternative means of collecting existing tolls, Sanral KwaZulu-Natal and the Free State regional manager Logashri Sewnarain said at the time.<\/p>\n
The e-tolling system would be implemented at the existing Mariannhill Toll Plaza on the N3 and on the N2 at the Oribi Toll Plaza near Port Shepstone.<\/p>\n
