{"id":58815,"date":"2014-05-26T14:12:46","date_gmt":"2014-05-26T12:12:46","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/?p=58815"},"modified":"2014-05-27T09:45:45","modified_gmt":"2014-05-27T07:45:45","slug":"slow-internet-hampering-economic-growth","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/broadband\/58815\/slow-internet-hampering-economic-growth\/","title":{"rendered":"Slow internet hampering SA economic growth"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The recent release of the 2014 World Economic Forum\u2019s (WEF) Global Information Technology (IT) report has confirmed a devastating decline in South Africa\u2019s IT infrastructure and the skyrocketing costs of internet connectivity.<\/p>\n<p>This is according to Wilmot James, the Democratic Alliance (DA) shadow minister of Trade and Industry, who released a statement criticizing\u00a0 the quality of Internet access in South Africa.<\/p>\n<p>James said that although South Africa\u2019s ranking has stabilised \u201cor rather, stagnated\u201d at 70 out of 148, there have been drastic declines in key rankings:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Internet speed: 73\/144, a 7 spot drop since 2013;<\/li>\n<li>Internet accessibility: 87\/144, a 2 spot drop since 2013);<\/li>\n<li>Prepaid mobile cellular tariff: 128\/144;
