The Independent Communications Authority of South Africa (Icasa) issued a statement on Friday, 30 May 2014, in which it distanced itself from media reports which stated that it intends to licence the extremely high frequency (EHF) radio spectrum bands.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe Authority would also like to categorically state that it has no plans to do so in its 2014\/15 Annual Performance Plan,\u201d Icasa said.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe Authority is putting it on record that it is only when it has taken a position on the matter, that it will make an announcement to all stakeholders.\u201d<\/p>\n
This spectrum, which falls in the 50GHz to 80GHz frequency bands, was recently discussed during an event at the Icasa offices in Sandton which was organised by the Wireless Access Providers Association (Wapa).<\/p>\n
Icasa said that its position is that \u201cthese statements\u201d were made by an Icasa Councillor at the event on Thursday, 29 May 2014 in his personal capacity, and not as representing the official view of Icasa.<\/p>\n
\u201cIcasa currently does not have a regime under which these technologies can be type approved and allowed to be used in South Africa,\u201d the statement concluded.<\/p>\n
