The Gauteng provincial government will officially open a new licensing centre at the Midrand Gautrain station on Thursday (9 June).<\/p>\n
“The opening of the first Driving Licence Testing Centre (DLTC) in a Gautrain Station is aimed at creating additional capacity to meet the existing demand for license renewals in the province, the provincial government said.<\/p>\n
“The new generation centre will offer services such as applications for driver\u2019s license and renewals, issuing of temporary driver\u2019s licenses, as well as payment of traffic fines. The centre will also provide full online and cashless services as part of the provincial government commitment to exploring new technologies and process optimisation.”<\/p>\n
The move comes after Gauteng\u2019s Public Transport and Roads Infrastructure MEC Jacob Mamabolo gazetted changes that will allow the Gautrain to perform some of the same functions as a traditional DLTC in November 2021.<\/p>\n
The regulatory Gautrain Management Agency (GMA) will be able to offer DLTC services from Gautrain stations, with the agency being graded as a \u2018Grade F\u2019 licencing centre. This means that it is authorised to:<\/p>\n
Speaking on the move, Transport minister Fikile Mbalula said that current regulations allow for providers other than DLTCs to provide licencing services \u2013 provided they have been given permission by their respective provincial governments.<\/p>\n
“The Gauteng MEC Jacob Mamabolo has delegated Gautrain to render DLTC functions. In terms of the provisions of section 18 of the Road Traffic Management Corporation Act, out of the 10 functional areas driving licences is of its competencies.<\/p>\n
“However, the power vests with the MECs in the provinces to open DLTCs or delegate municipalities or other agencies to render these services,” he said.<\/p>\n
A new driving licence card is expected to launch in the country by October 2023.<\/p>\n
