{"id":596366,"date":"2022-06-13T13:09:11","date_gmt":"2022-06-13T11:09:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/?p=596366"},"modified":"2022-06-13T13:13:41","modified_gmt":"2022-06-13T11:13:41","slug":"south-africa-cant-cope-with-the-number-of-cars-on-its-roads-minister","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/motoring\/596366\/south-africa-cant-cope-with-the-number-of-cars-on-its-roads-minister\/","title":{"rendered":"South Africa can&#8217;t cope with the number of cars on its roads: minister"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A recent presentation by the Department of Transport suggests that the South African road network was not planned for the current traffic volumes, says minister Fikile Mbalula.<\/p>\n<p>Responding in a recent written parliamentary Q&amp;A, Mbalula said that a large volume of traffic has migrated from rail to road which has led to significantly increased road freight volumes.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Households currently procure several vehicles as opposed to one vehicle per family as anticipated when the broader road network was planned. This, as well as the delay of timely routine maintenance activities, contribute to the state in which roads are in,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p>In a <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/motoring\/592872\/government-says-traffic-could-soon-become-intolerable-in-parts-of-south-africa-heres-the-plan-to-fix-it\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">report<\/a> <\/strong>published at the start of June, the department warned that traffic was on track to become &#8216;intolerable&#8217; in parts of the country as congestion issues worsened.<\/p>\n<p><a  data-lightbox=\"post-image\" href=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/Roads.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-596370 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/Roads.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"646\" height=\"700\" srcset=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/Roads.png 646w, https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/Roads-277x300.png 277w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 646px) 100vw, 646px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>In a February address, Mbalula said that 80% of South Africa\u2019s roads have reached the end of their design life. \u201cAmongst the many challenges we seek to tackle, we remain burdened with the intractable challenge of the road maintenance backlog,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe total paved and gravelled network at the provincial level is 184,816 kilometres. 40% of this (provincial) network has reached the end of its design life, as approximately 80% of the (national) road network is now older than the 20-year design life.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>While the South African National Roads Agency (Sanral) is responsible for the primary network, provinces and municipalities are responsible for the secondary and tertiary networks, he said.<\/p>\n<p>Data from analytics firm\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/motoring\/545018\/the-cities-with-the-worst-traffic-in-south-africa-and-where-the-most-dangerous-roads-are\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Inrix<\/a>\u00a0<\/strong>shows Cape Town remains the most congested city in the country, ranking 59th globally. Johannesburg was second, and 48th globally, with a -36% drop in traffic compared to pre-Covid-19 data.
