{"id":597462,"date":"2022-06-15T13:11:30","date_gmt":"2022-06-15T11:11:30","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/?p=597462"},"modified":"2022-06-15T13:11:30","modified_gmt":"2022-06-15T11:11:30","slug":"ramaphosa-approves-pay-increases-for-government-officials-heres-what-they-now-earn","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/government\/597462\/ramaphosa-approves-pay-increases-for-government-officials-heres-what-they-now-earn\/","title":{"rendered":"Ramaphosa approves pay increases for government officials &#8211; here&#8217;s what they now earn"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>President Cyril Ramaphosa has approved the salaries for a number of top government and parliamentary positions.<\/p>\n<p>In a gazette published on Tuesday (14 June), the president announced the salaries will take effect retroactively from 1 April 2021, with remuneration structured as follows:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>A basic salary component equal to 60% of the total package, which constitutes the pensionable salary;<\/li>\n<li>An amount of <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thesait.org.za\/news\/199492\/Section-81d-allowance-for-holders-of-public-offices.htm#:~:text=With%20Parliament%20members%20they%20receive,which%20exceeded%20their%20yearly%20allowance.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">R120,000 per annum<\/a><\/strong> as per section 8(1)(d) of the Income Tax Act;<\/li>\n<li>An employer&#8217;s pension benefit contribution equal to 22.5% of pensionable salary.<\/li>\n<li>A flexible portion for the remaining amount of the total remuneration.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Based on these latest salaries, deputy president David Mabuza will now receive R2,910,234 &#8211; a close to R100,000 increase from his <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/government\/490451\/heres-how-much-south-africas-ministers-and-other-top-government-officials-will-get-paid-this-year\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">total remuneration package last year<\/a><\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>By comparison, the country&#8217;s ministers and deputy ministers will now receive R2,473,682 and R2,037,129 respectively.<\/p>\n<div class=\"bt_table\">\n<div class=\"table-responsive\"><table class=\"table\" width=\"100%\" cellspacing=\"0\" cellpadding=\"6\">\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<th bgcolor=\"#CCCCCC\" width=\"50%\">Position<\/th>\n<th style=\"text-align: center;\" bgcolor=\"#CCCCCC\" width=\"50%\">Total remuneration<\/th>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td>Deputy President<\/td>\n<td style=\"text-align: center;\">R2 910 234<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td>Minister<\/td>\n<td style=\"text-align: center;\">R2 473 682<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td>Deputy Minister<\/td>\n<td style=\"text-align: center;\">R2 037 129<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>Members of parliament and other senior legislative figures also received increases, with the speaker of the national assembly Nosiviwe Mapisa-Nqakula set to take home over R2.9 million.
