Amazon has named Dan Brown’s Inferno as South Africa’s best-selling e-book, based on Kindle books purchased by customers over the past year.<\/p>\n
The top ten best-selling books takes into account Kindle editions purchased by South African customers between June 1, 2013 and May 31, 2014.<\/p>\n
Amazon recently announced that Kindle Paperwhite is now available in South African retail stores, and will be demoed at the Cape Town International Book Fair from 13-15 June 2014, it said.<\/p>\n
According to PwC\u2019s entertainment and media outlook 2013 \u2013 2017, there is a marked decline in both physical entertainment and educational book sales in South Africa, while digital content faces slow uptake.<\/p>\n
In the report, PwC said that, while a number of local e-commerce services have become established in South Africa that sell both physical and e-books online, the cost of e-readers and bandwidth constraints make the downloading of books difficult in some areas.<\/p>\n
The consumer and educational book market as a whole has fallen from R4.1 billion in 2008 to R3.6 billion in 2012 \u2013 however, this is expected to increase slightly to R3.7 billion by 2017.<\/p>\n
The consumer book market is forecast to grow at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 2.5% to reach R1.6 billion in 2017, up from R1.4 billion in 2012, PwC said.<\/p>\n
However, the educational book market is expected to fall by a negative CAGR of 1.1% to R2.1 billion in 2017 \u2013 down from R2.8 billion in 2008.<\/p>\n
