The bakkie market has seen an influx of new entrants and models in the first half of the year, at a time when petrol prices continue to soar to new highs.<\/p>\n

Ford, for example, is set to release its next generation of the popular Ranger soon, while the new Volkswagen Amarok will also be revealed in 2022. Jeep has also entered the bakkie market with its new Gladiator Rubicon at a hefty R1.26 million price tag. In the bakkies launch month, Jeep sold an impressive 55 units.<\/p>\n

The National Association of Automobile Manufacturers of South Africa (Naamsa<\/a>) reported domestic sales of new light commercial vehicles, bakkies and mini-buses at 8,877 units during June 2022 – down 20.8% from the 11,206 units sold a year ago.<\/p>\n

Ford Ranger was the best-selling bakkie in June 2022, making it the second month in a row for the US brand made locally.<\/p>\n

The Ranger sold 1,601 units, ahead of Toyota Hilux, which dipped below 1,000 units. Toyota has seen a significant decrease in domestic sales from 1,368 units in May.<\/p>\n

Naamsa reported the following models as being the top sellers for June:<\/p>\n

  7. GWM P-Series \u2013 382 units<\/li>\n
  8. Toyota Land Cruiser 79 \u2013 297 units<\/li>\n
  9. GWM Steed \u2013 277 units<\/li>\n
  10. Volkswagen Amarok \u2013 184 units<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    Fuel prices<\/strong><\/p>\n

    Given their size, weight, engine size and design, bakkies are often less fuel efficient than their sedan and hatchbacks brothers and sisters. The majority of bakkies listed by Naamsa have tanks around 80 litres, making it common practice to fork out more than R2,000 to fill a tank.<\/p>\n
