{"id":60787,"date":"2014-06-19T11:56:12","date_gmt":"2014-06-19T09:56:12","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/?p=60787"},"modified":"2014-06-19T12:15:04","modified_gmt":"2014-06-19T10:15:04","slug":"low-university-attendance-amongst-blacks-in-sa","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/trending\/60787\/low-university-attendance-amongst-blacks-in-sa\/","title":{"rendered":"Low university attendance amongst blacks in SA"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Black South African student attendance rates at tertiary level remains proportionally low in comparison with the Indian\/Asian and white population groups.<\/p>\n<p>This is according to the General Household Survey (GHS), conducted by Stats SA between January and December 2013.<\/p>\n<p>The survey estimates that 740,893 students were enrolled at higher education institutions (universities and universities of technology) in 2013.<\/p>\n<p>Almost two-thirds (66.4%) of these students were black African, while 22.3% were white; 6.7% coloured and 4.7% Indian\/Asian.<\/p>\n<p>The survey noted, however, that even though most students were black African, the student participation rate of this population group remained proportionally low.<\/p>\n<p>StatsSA&#8217;s research showed that less than 4.3% of persons aged 18 to 29 were enrolled at a higher education institution in the country \u00a0\u2500\u00a0 up from 4% in 2002.<\/p>\n<p>An estimated 18.7% of white individuals in this age group and 9.2% of Indian\/Asian individuals were enrolled at a university compared to 3.1% of the coloured and 3.2% of the black African population groups.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_60799\" style=\"width: 610px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a  data-lightbox=\"post-image\" href=\"http:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/06\/Distribution-of-students-by-group.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-60799\" class=\"wp-image-60799\" src=\"http:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/06\/Distribution-of-students-by-group.png\" alt=\"Distribution of students by group\" width=\"600\" height=\"336\" srcset=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/06\/Distribution-of-students-by-group.png 1120w, https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/06\/Distribution-of-students-by-group-300x168.png 300w, https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/06\/Distribution-of-students-by-group-1024x574.png 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-60799\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Distribution of students by group<\/p><\/div>\n<p>The study found that 77.8% of students were enrolled at public institutions.
