{"id":61039,"date":"2014-06-23T10:57:18","date_gmt":"2014-06-23T08:57:18","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/?p=61039"},"modified":"2014-06-23T10:57:18","modified_gmt":"2014-06-23T08:57:18","slug":"dstv-boxoffice-hits-530000-rentals-per-month","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/media\/61039\/dstv-boxoffice-hits-530000-rentals-per-month\/","title":{"rendered":"DStv BoxOffice hits 530,000 rentals per month"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Internet and media giant, Naspers, says that its BoxOffice service, is averaging 529,000 movie rentals\u00a0 per month.<\/p>\n<p>MultiChoice, the Naspers arm which operates the DStv Satellite Television service, recently\u00a0(1 June) lifted its DStv BoxOffice rental prices from R25 to R27 per new movie.<\/p>\n<p>At R25 per rental, the group&#8217;s BoxOffice service amounted to R13.2 million per month in revenue, and is up from 400,000 movie rentals per month it recorded in 2013.<\/p>\n<p>Naspers also reported that its pay television service in South Africa, DStv, broke through five million subscribers in 2014.<\/p>\n<p>The group said its DStv subscribers reached 5.008 million subscribers for the year ended March 2014, from 4.451 million in 2013.<\/p>\n<p>Naspers said that its PVR base increased 15% year on year, from\u00a0956,000 to 1.1 million after the group launched its new Explora PVR with expanded hard drive in 2013.<\/p>\n<p>Overall pay-television subscriber numbers gained by 1.3 million households, taking the base to over eight million homes across 50 countries in sub-Saharan Africa.<\/p>\n<p>Pay television revenue for the year ended March 2014, climbed 20% to R36.271 billion.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_61047\" style=\"width: 610px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a  data-lightbox=\"post-image\" href=\"http:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/06\/Naspers-pay-TV.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-61047\" class=\"size-full wp-image-61047\" src=\"http:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/06\/Naspers-pay-TV.jpg\" alt=\"Naspers pay TV\" width=\"600\" height=\"594\" srcset=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/06\/Naspers-pay-TV.jpg 600w, https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/06\/Naspers-pay-TV-150x150.jpg 150w, https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/06\/Naspers-pay-TV-300x297.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-61047\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Naspers pay TV<\/p><\/div>\n<p>&#8220;Continued expansion of digital terrestrial (DTT) services, more investment in local content and an increase in online service offerings resulted in 13% growth in trading profit to R8.5 billion, Naspers said.<\/p>\n<p>DTT subscribers, represented through GOtv, climbed from 547,000 subscribers, to 817,000 in 11 countries in Africa.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;DTT coverage has been expanded and now covers eight countries and 92 cities.
