{"id":61549,"date":"2014-06-27T16:00:48","date_gmt":"2014-06-27T14:00:48","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/?p=61549"},"modified":"2014-06-27T13:59:05","modified_gmt":"2014-06-27T11:59:05","slug":"google-apple-and-microsoft-respond-to-sa-digital-tax","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/trending\/61549\/google-apple-and-microsoft-respond-to-sa-digital-tax\/","title":{"rendered":"Google, Apple and Microsoft respond to SA digital tax"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>New regulations from National Treasury, which came into effect on 1 June 2014, mandated that 14% value added tax (VAT) be <a title=\"New digital tax for South Africa postponed\" href=\"http:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/internet\/99590-new-digital-tax-for-south-africa-postponed.html\"><strong>charged on electronic goods and services<\/strong><\/a> sold in South Africa.<\/p>\n<p>When Treasury first released <a href=\"http:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/internet\/95953-digital-products-taxed-in-sa-from-april-treasury.html\">a draft<\/a> of the regulations at the end of January 2014, it immediately sparked speculation about which international online service providers would bother complying with our local tax laws.<\/p>\n<p>Days before the new tax regulations were originally set to commence (1 April 2014), Australian-based enterprise software company Atlassian \u2013 which is also behind code hosting service Bitbucket \u2013 informed its South African customers that it would be <a title=\"First new digital tax for South Africans emerge\" href=\"http:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/internet\/99520-first-new-digital-tax-for-south-africans-emerge.html\">collecting VAT<\/a> from them.<\/p>\n<p>Hours after Atlassian\u2019s e-mails became public knowledge, Treasury released its actual electronic services regulations for the purposes of VAT, which delayed the commencement date to 1 June 2014.<\/p>\n<p>The company later indicated that it was just trying to be prepared in case the SA government decided to proceed with the new digital VAT at the start of April.<\/p>\n<p>A week after the new regulations came into effect, an e-mail hit the web in which Apple told developers that it would be <a title=\"New digital tax hits Apple App Store in SA: report\" href=\"http:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/internet\/103821-new-digital-tax-hits-apple-app-store-in-sa-report.html\">changing the pricing tiers<\/a> for applications sold in South Africa to account for the 14% VAT.<\/p>\n<p>Prices across the South African <a href=\"http:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/internet\/104769-itunes-price-increase-in-sa.html\">iTunes music and movie stores<\/a> have also since increased.<\/p>\n<p>Following the news that Apple would be increasing its retail pricing tiers for the the South African app store, we asked a number of other companies with digital storefronts whether they would be complying with our tax laws.<\/p>\n<p>The table below summarises the responses we received by the time of publication:<\/p>\n<div class=\"table-responsive\"><table class=\"table\" style=\"background-color: #f4f4f4; width: 100%;\" border=\"1\" cellpadding=\"5\">\n<tbody>\n<tr style=\"background-color: #004276; font-weight: bold; color: #fff;\">\n<td>Company<\/td>\n<td>Store<\/td>\n<td>Comment<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td>Apple<\/td>\n<td>iTunes<\/td>\n<td>Let developers know about the price change.
