{"id":616243,"date":"2022-08-13T15:00:49","date_gmt":"2022-08-13T13:00:49","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/?p=616243"},"modified":"2022-08-13T15:31:08","modified_gmt":"2022-08-13T13:31:08","slug":"sars-warns-of-new-scams-targeting-south-africans","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/business-opinion\/616243\/sars-warns-of-new-scams-targeting-south-africans\/","title":{"rendered":"SARS warns of new scams targeting South Africans"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The South African Revenue Service (SARS) has warned taxpayers to be aware of<span class=\"css-901oao css-16my406 r-poiln3 r-bcqeeo r-qvutc0\"> emails or SMSs that ask for personal, tax, banking and eFiling details.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>It said that members of the public are randomly emailed with false \u201cspoofed\u201d emails made to look as if these emails were sent from SARS, but are in fact fraudulent emails aimed at enticing unsuspecting taxpayers to part with personal information such as bank account details.<\/p>\n<p>Examples include emails that appear to be from returns@sars.co.za\u00a0or refunds@sars.co.za\u00a0indicating that taxpayers are eligible to receive\u00a0tax refunds.<\/p>\n<p>These emails contain links to false forms and fake websites made to look like the \u201creal thing\u201d, but with the aim of fooling people into entering personal information such as bank account details which the criminals then extract and use fraudulently, it said.<\/p>\n<p>It tax service pointed to two emails circulating:<\/p>\n<p><a  data-lightbox=\"post-image\" href=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/SARS.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-616251\" src=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/SARS.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"768\" height=\"812\" srcset=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/SARS.png 768w, https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/SARS-284x300.png 284w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 768px) 100vw, 768px\" \/><\/a><a  data-lightbox=\"post-image\" href=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/SARS1.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-616249\" src=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/SARS1.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"790\" height=\"638\" srcset=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/SARS1.png 790w, https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/SARS1-300x242.png 300w, https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/SARS1-768x620.png 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 790px) 100vw, 790px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>SARS taxpayers should take note of the following:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Do not open or respond to emails from unknown sources.<\/li>\n<li>Beware of emails that ask for personal, tax, banking and eFiling details (login credentials, passwords, pins, credit\/debit card information, etc.).<\/li>\n<li>SARS will never request your banking details in any communication that you receive via post, email, or SMS. However, for the purpose of telephonic engagement and authentication purposes, SARS will verify your personal details.
