{"id":61629,"date":"2014-06-30T14:28:49","date_gmt":"2014-06-30T12:28:49","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/?p=61629"},"modified":"2014-06-30T14:28:49","modified_gmt":"2014-06-30T12:28:49","slug":"unlicensed-software-costs-sa-r4-billion","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/software\/61629\/unlicensed-software-costs-sa-r4-billion\/","title":{"rendered":"Unlicensed software costs SA R4 billion"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>New research finds that unlicensed software was installed on 43% of global PCs in 2013 with a commercial value of $62.7 billion.<\/p>\n<p>BSA\u2019s Global Software Survey found that in South Africa, the unlicensed software rate was at 34%, down from 35% in the prior survey conducted in 2011.<\/p>\n<p>The commercial value of unlicensed software in SA in 2013 stood at $385 million (R4.08 billion), down from $564 million 2011.<\/p>\n<p>In terms of the commercial value of unlicensed PC Software, the US topped the global list at $9.7 billion at an unlicensed rate of 18% and in a licensed market of $44.4 billion, followed by China, India, Brazil and France.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_61639\" style=\"width: 484px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a  data-lightbox=\"post-image\" href=\"http:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/06\/Unlicensed-PC-software-2013.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-61639\" class=\"size-full wp-image-61639\" src=\"http:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/06\/Unlicensed-PC-software-2013.png\" alt=\"Unlicensed PC software 2013\" width=\"474\" height=\"690\" srcset=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/06\/Unlicensed-PC-software-2013.png 474w, https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/06\/Unlicensed-PC-software-2013-206x300.png 206w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 474px) 100vw, 474px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-61639\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Unlicensed PC software 2013<\/p><\/div>\n<p>South Africa&#8217;s\u00a0unlicensed software installation rate was the lowest in Africa, ahead of the likes of Egypt (62%) Nigeria (81%), Kenya (78%), and Tunisia (75%).<\/p>\n<p>However, due to the size of its market, countries like Egypt ($198 million), Nigeria ($287 million), and Kenya ($128 million), were well below SA in terms of the commercial value of unlicensed software.<\/p>\n<p>The report, drawn from a global survey of nearly 22,000 consumers and enterprise PC<br \/>\nusers, along with a parallel survey of more than 2,000 IT managers, found that emerging markets now account for a 56% of all PCs in use globally \u2014 and nearly three-quarters of all unlicensed software installations (73%).<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;That trend is likely to continue, as this year\u2019s study found that 65% of the PC software installed in emerging economies was not properly licensed, versus 23% in developed economies,&#8221;
