Inflation featured in the top three worries for <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">consumers in the recent Money Stress Tracker survey and has been cited as one of the primary drivers for debt counselling applications by consumers, the group said.<br \/>\n<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span id=\"page1R_mcid12\" class=\"markedContent\"><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">In Q2 2022,<\/span> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">there was increased demand from consumers for debt counselling, with inquiries up 17% compared to the same period last year<\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">. <\/span><\/span><span id=\"page14R_mcid99\" class=\"markedContent\"><\/span><\/p>\n<p><a  data-lightbox=\"post-image\" href=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/DebtBusters-1.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-617689\" src=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/DebtBusters-1.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"974\" height=\"163\" srcset=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/DebtBusters-1.png 974w, https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/DebtBusters-1-300x50.png 300w, https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/DebtBusters-1-768x129.png 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 974px) 100vw, 974px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span id=\"page14R_mcid99\" class=\"markedContent\"><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">For those taking home more than R20,000 per month the total debt to annual net <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">income ratio is 147%, while consumers<\/span><\/span> in this income bracket s<span id=\"page1R_mcid25\" class=\"markedContent\"><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">pend around 66% of their take-home pay to service their debt.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><a  data-lightbox=\"post-image\" href=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/DebtBusters.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-617563\" src=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/DebtBusters.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"1157\" height=\"574\" srcset=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/DebtBusters.png 1157w, https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/DebtBusters-300x149.png 300w, https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/DebtBusters-1024x508.png 1024w, https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/DebtBusters-768x381.png 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1157px) 100vw, 1157px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"markedContent\"><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">In the last six years, average net incomes were flat, meaning in real terms &#8211; when <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">compared against inflation &#8211; most South Africans have 34% less purchasing power in <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">2022 compared to 2016, <\/span><\/span><span class=\"markedContent\"><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">resulting in the need to supplement this income with unsecured borrowing.<\/span><br role=\"presentation\" \/><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"markedContent\"><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">On average, consumers have 22% more unsecured debt in 2022 compared to <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">2016, however unsecured debt levels are slightly lower than 2021 levels.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><a  data-lightbox=\"post-image\" href=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/DebtBusters1-1.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-617695\" src=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/DebtBusters1-1.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"1142\" height=\"593\" srcset=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/DebtBusters1-1.png 1142w, https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/DebtBusters1-1-300x156.png 300w, https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/DebtBusters1-1-1024x532.png 1024w, https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/DebtBusters1-1-768x399.png 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1142px) 100vw, 1142px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span id=\"page22R_mcid23\" class=\"markedContent\"><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">Total debt levels (which include both secured and unsecured debt) have increased <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">by 18% compared to Q2 2016; vehicles in particular &#8211; are<\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\"> seeking financial assistance, the debt specialist said.<br \/>\n<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><a  data-lightbox=\"post-image\" href=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/Screenshot-2022-08-17-121728-e1660731477359.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-617643\" src=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/Screenshot-2022-08-17-121728-e1660731477359.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"1000\" height=\"607\" srcset=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/Screenshot-2022-08-17-121728-e1660731477359.png 1000w, https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/Screenshot-2022-08-17-121728-e1660731477359-300x182.png 300w, https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/Screenshot-2022-08-17-121728-e1660731477359-768x466.png 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1000px) 100vw, 1000px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>South Africa&#8217;s economy is characterized by low levels of economic growth, high levels of unemployment, inflation rates above the upper limit of the SA Reserve Bank\u2019s inflation target (above 6%) and a cycle of increases to the repo rate \u2013 increasing the cost of credit, said Chris Blair, CEO at remuneration firm 21st Century.<\/p>\n<p>The inflation rate for June 2022 is 7.4% up from 6.5% in May 2022.<\/p>\n<p>The Consumer Price Index report, published by Stats SA in June 2022, showed that the lowest two expenditure deciles \u2013 the 20% of people who spend the least \u2013 faced the highest inflation rate with the lowest decile facing 9.1% and the second lowest decile facing 8.5%.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis indicates that presently, the worst of the local inflation is being faced by the most marginalised groups,\u201d said Blair.<\/p>\n<p>This makes sense as the proportion spent on basic goods such as food, fuel, and transport is much larger within the spending basket of the lowest expenditure deciles.
