{"id":619535,"date":"2022-08-28T12:00:40","date_gmt":"2022-08-28T10:00:40","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/?p=619535"},"modified":"2022-08-26T15:58:21","modified_gmt":"2022-08-26T13:58:21","slug":"beware-this-new-scam-targeting-south-africans","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/business\/619535\/beware-this-new-scam-targeting-south-africans\/","title":{"rendered":"Beware this new scam targeting South Africans"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Southern African Fraud Prevention Service (SAFPS) warns consumers of an Advance Fee scam where the perpetrator is falsely presenting themselves as a representative of the SAFPS.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe SAFPS is concerned about this and is urging the public to exercise caution and to be vigilant. This is another example of the risk-based environment facing South African consumers and how easy it can be for consumers to potentially become victims if they are not actively looking for red flags,&#8221; said Manie van Schalkwyk, CEO of the SAFPS.<\/p>\n<p>An advance-fee scam is\u00a0a form of fraudulent scam and is one of the most common types of tricks that tries to lull consumers into a false sense of confidence.<\/p>\n<p>The scam typically involves promising the potential victim a significant share of a large sum of money in return for a small up-front payment.
