Consumers also often still require in-person banking for specific needs such as home loans, retirement queries or onboarding into the bank, Creemers added.

However, Martin Grunewald, the chief business officer of clearing house BankservAfrica, said that even if there is a hesitancy in the market, Discovery and other banks need to move toward and plan for a cashless future.

“If we just sit back and accept that that’s the way it will always be, we don’t reimagine that world. The country recorded a 100% increase in the number of mobile money transfers that took place in 2020.

In 2020. the Kenyan central bank worked with mobile money operators to facilitate the increased use of mobile money transactions as a substitute for cash, said BCG.

BCG reported that Covid-19 was the largest catalyst toward a more digital banking system. Creemer said that the pandemic forced people to engage more digitally with their banks. However, they subsequently adopted it as the norm.

“The initiative resulted in several regulatory and industry changes geared towards facilitating the ease and affordability of mobile payments.
