qualification scandal at the SABC

The chairperson of the South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC), Ellen Tshabalala, lied to Parliament about her qualifications, City Press reported on Sunday.

Tshabalala claimed to have a commerce degree and a postgraduate diploma on her CV, according to the report, and President Jacob Zuma appointed her as chair of the public broadcaster during October 2013.

However, the response to a successful Promotion of Access to Information Act application sent to the University of South Africa (Unisa) revealed that Tshabalala has neither qualification.

This report comes after the controversial appointment of Hlaudi Motsoeneng to the position of chief operations officer at the SABC after he lied about his qualifications.

In a report published in February 2014, Public Protector Thuli Madonsela found that Motsoeneng’s appointment and salary progression were irregular.

She also concluded that Motsoeneng irregularly and rapidly increased the salaries of various staff members, resulting in the state broadcaster footing a salary bill escalation of R29 million.

Madonsela recommended that the SABC board institute corrective action against the “dishonest” Motsoeneng.

City Press reported that it asked the Presidency and the SABC for comment.

The Presidency reportedly said the matter should be taken up with Tshabalala and that a university degree was not a pre-requisite for the appointment.

A spokesperson for the SABC initially declined to comment, saying the President appointed Tshabalala.

According to the City Press, the SABC spokesperson later said he had forwarded the questions to Tshabalala who said she would deal with them personally.

However, she did not respond to further questions on Friday, 11 July 2014, City Press said.

This article <a
