{"id":628584,"date":"2022-09-27T07:00:22","date_gmt":"2022-09-27T05:00:22","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/?p=628584"},"modified":"2022-09-27T07:00:22","modified_gmt":"2022-09-27T05:00:22","slug":"public-servants-signal-rejection-of-south-african-government-wage-offer","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/business\/628584\/public-servants-signal-rejection-of-south-african-government-wage-offer\/","title":{"rendered":"Public servants signal rejection of South African government wage offer"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>South African public servants are preparing to reject a government wage offer, raising the prospect of the first major strike by state workers in more than a decade.<\/p>\n<p>Preliminary results from a ballot of the Public Servants Association, the biggest government labor union, show workers won\u2019t accept the proposal to increase pay by 3% and continue receiving a cash gratuity until March, the PSA said Monday in an emailed statement.<\/p>\n<p>The government\u2019s current offer expires on Wednesday.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCurrent mandating outcomes indicate that votes are tilting toward rejecting the offer,\u201d the PSA said.<\/p>\n<p>Remuneration of the government\u2019s 1.3 million workers accounts for almost a third of total government expenditure, and keeping it in check is key to the National Treasury\u2019s plans to rein in the budget deficit and bring runaway state debt under control. Tensions have been growing between them over a decision by the ANC-led government to renege on a 2018 wage agreement &#8212; a decision that was backed by the country\u2019s highest court.<\/p>\n<p>Cosatu has also been scathing of the government for failing to address an ongoing energy crisis, as South Africa experiences record power outages this year.<\/p>\n<p>Public-sector workers last went on strike for three weeks in 2010 before settling on a wage increase of 7.5%.
