High fuel prices and soaring inflation in 2022 have led to the average consumer seeking ways to cut costs. For many motorists, this may mean looking for an affordable car with economical fuel consumption.<\/p>\n

The National Association of Automobile Manufacturers of South Africa (Naamsa)\u2019s New Vehicle Sales stats show that the Volkswagen Polo Vivo was the second best-selling car in South Africa throughout September 2022, with 2,473 units sold.<\/p>\n

The Vivo\u2019s entry-level model has a price tag of R243,600 \u2013 offering a 1.4-litre petrol engine with average fuel consumption of 5.7 L\/100km.<\/p>\n

However, while the VW Vivo is still considered an entry-level vehicle, the sheer cost of living in 2022 may mean that a price tag nearing R250,000 is beyond reach for many \u2013 especially when one looks at the impact rising interest rates have had on the prime lending rate, which is now sitting at 9.75%.<\/p>\n

A R250,000 vehicle amounts to a repayment rate exceeding R5,000 per month.<\/p>\n

In light of the current economic environment, new brands have emerged with a focus on more affordable models and the introduction of many new entry-level options from established brands.<\/p>\n

Economy cars such as the Suzuki S-Presso, which starts from R156,900, come with a compact 1.0l engine offering fuel efficiency of 4.9l\/100km and low CO2 emissions of 118g\/km, according to Suzuki Auto.<\/p>\n

Considering the newly-adjusted petrol prices for October, a 27-litre fuel tank means filling up the S-Presso with 95 unleaded costs roughly R631,26.<\/p>\n
