{"id":632331,"date":"2022-10-07T09:25:02","date_gmt":"2022-10-07T07:25:02","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/?p=632331"},"modified":"2022-10-07T09:25:02","modified_gmt":"2022-10-07T07:25:02","slug":"loss-making-oil-company-seeks-ceo-to-lead-revamp-in-south-africa","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/energy\/632331\/loss-making-oil-company-seeks-ceo-to-lead-revamp-in-south-africa\/","title":{"rendered":"Loss-making oil company seeks CEO to lead revamp in South Africa"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>South Africa\u2019s PetroSA is taking steps to end a legacy of mismanagement and continuing annual losses as it plans a project with TotalEnergies SE, according to its interim chairman.<\/p>\n<p>The state-owned oil company has reported a string of losses, including a record 20.7 billion rand ($1.2 billion) in 2019, and experienced a high turnover of executives through the same period.<\/p>\n<p>More recently, the government made plans to expand PetroSA\u2019s profile, adding gas and fuel storage businesses as the nation sees an increase in oil and gas activity.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTo us, leadership is critical,\u201d Nkululeko Poya, chairman of PetroSA, who has served in the role since last year, said in an interview in Cape Town. The company expects to appoint a chief executive officer and chief operating officer by the end of November.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf you want change, one of the things you might want to do is to change the executives that have created those losses.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>South African president Cyril Ramaphosa\u2019s government has struggled to turn around its large state-owned companies, despite years of initiatives to do so. Power utility Eskom Holdings SOC Ltd. has failed to meet demand, resulting in power cuts that hobble the nation.<\/p>\n<p>A growing national oil company could also bring negative consequences if it isn\u2019t run properly.<\/p>\n<p>Time is limited.
