{"id":63599,"date":"2014-07-22T16:35:54","date_gmt":"2014-07-22T14:35:54","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/?p=63599"},"modified":"2014-07-22T16:35:54","modified_gmt":"2014-07-22T14:35:54","slug":"why-sanral-uses-blue-lights","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/trending\/63599\/why-sanral-uses-blue-lights\/","title":{"rendered":"Why Sanral uses blue lights"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The use of blue lights on the traffic control vehicles of the South African National Roads Agency Limited (Sanral) is completely legal, the company said in a statement on Tuesday (22 July 2014).<\/p>\n<p>Not only is it legal, Sanral has said that these vehicles need to have blue lights.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf they don\u2019t, they operate illegally,\u201d the road agency said.<\/p>\n<p>This statement from Sanral follows a recent press release issued by the Justice Project South Africa (JPSA), in which it&#8217;s chairperson said that Sanral must remove all Gauteng Traffic Police branding from its vehicles.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Sanral e-tolls branded vehicles (midi-buses, trucks, and trailers) all bear the five pointed star of the GDoCS Gauteng Traffic Police and in the case of midi-buses and trucks, are fitted with blue flashing light bars and, presumably \u2014 sirens,\u201d JPSA chair Howard Dembovsky said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis in itself is tantamount to impersonation of a traffic officer (vehicle) and since Sanral has now publicly admitted that it \u2018has no authority to enforce e-toll laws\u2019, all Gauteng Traffic Police branding, warning lamps, and sirens must be removed from these vehicles forthwith,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p><a  data-lightbox=\"post-image\" href=\"http:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/Sanral-E-toll-branded-vehicle-with-blue-lights.jpg\" data-slb-group=\"slb\" data-slb-active=\"1\" data-slb-internal=\"0\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-106691\" src=\"http:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/Sanral-E-toll-branded-vehicle-with-blue-lights.jpg\" alt=\"Sanral E-toll branded vehicle with blue lights\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Sanral said that Dembovsky\u2019s statements expose \u201cthe shallowness and lack of understanding of those who purport to be experts on the matter\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>The agency added that it has taken legal advice every step of the way in implementing the highway e-toll system \u2014 and won every challenge that has been taken to the courts of the country.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThose who want to challenge us on the legality of the use of blue lights are welcome to do so,\u201d said Sanral\u2019s head of communications, Vusi Mona.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt is not their opinion that matters, but what the law says, and we are confident we have done everything by the book. What we do is legal.
