{"id":636165,"date":"2022-10-20T07:44:11","date_gmt":"2022-10-20T05:44:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/?p=636165"},"modified":"2022-10-20T08:48:37","modified_gmt":"2022-10-20T06:48:37","slug":"bitcoin-and-other-cryptocurrencies-are-now-officially-financial-products-in-south-africa","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/finance\/636165\/bitcoin-and-other-cryptocurrencies-are-now-officially-financial-products-in-south-africa\/","title":{"rendered":"Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies are now officially financial products in South Africa"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Crypto assets are to be treated as financial products in South Africa, to make it easier for regulators to monitor the market and help to safeguard consumers.<\/p>\n<p>The Financial Sector Conduct Authority defined crypto assets as \u201ca digital representation of value\u201d in a gazette notice published on Wednesday.<\/p>\n<p>A crypto asset isn\u2019t issued by the central bank but can be traded, transferred or stored electronically for purposes of payment, investment or other forms of utility, according to the announcement.<\/p>\n<p>The announcement is the first legal step that was required to bring the crypto-asset industry within the South African legal framework, said Brent Peterson, head of legal at Easy Crypto, a crypto exchange.<\/p>\n<p>The declaration, which takes effect immediately, comes as governments around the world push to regulate cryptocurrencies to protect users from turbulent digital coins and fraudsters.
