{"id":63677,"date":"2014-07-23T10:32:46","date_gmt":"2014-07-23T08:32:46","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/?p=63677"},"modified":"2014-07-23T10:32:46","modified_gmt":"2014-07-23T08:32:46","slug":"the-selfie-is-now-a-school-subject","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/internet\/63677\/the-selfie-is-now-a-school-subject\/","title":{"rendered":"The &#8216;selfie&#8217; is now a school subject"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span class=\"st\">A major UK <span class=\"st\">examination board<\/span> has\u00a0<\/span>overhauled its Sociology A Level syllabus to include the study of social media, cybercrime and selfies.<\/p>\n<p class=\"st\"><span class=\"st\">Oxford, Cambridge and RSA Examinations (<span class=\"st\">OCR<\/span>)<\/span> said that the new course &#8220;reflects key contemporary social challenges, including a compulsory module on the profound changes arising from globalisation and the digital media revolution&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>The new A Level would be implemented from September 2015, and will see Sociology &#8220;shake off its image as a softer subject with the inclusion of evidence-based research on globalisation in the digital era&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>Students will, for example, refer to studies on how Facebook makes people less satisfied with life; why 75% of 16-24 year-olds claim they couldn\u2019t live without the internet; how the sexes behave differently online; and how the global digital divide affects inequality,<span class=\"st\"><span class=\"st\"> the\u00a0<span class=\"st\"><span class=\"st\">OCR<\/span><\/span> said.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p>It further noted that with more than 1.3 billion people on Facebook, over a million selfies posted each day, and more people worldwide having access to a mobile phone than to a working toilet, students will analyse how societies manage the positive and negative impacts of, for example, freedom of information, privacy, online safety, equality of access to technology and gender stereotyping.<\/p>\n<p>Victoria Hunter, OCR subject team manager said: \u201cGlobalisation and digital communication are transforming work, family and leisure life.
