{"id":63806,"date":"2014-07-24T14:52:36","date_gmt":"2014-07-24T12:52:36","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/?p=63806"},"modified":"2014-07-24T14:52:36","modified_gmt":"2014-07-24T12:52:36","slug":"broadband-to-save-gauteng-r162-million","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/government\/63806\/broadband-to-save-gauteng-r162-million\/","title":{"rendered":"Broadband to save Gauteng R162 million"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"stcpDiv\" style=\"position: absolute; top: -1999px; left: -1988px;\">Gauteng Finance MEC Barbara Creecy<\/div>\n<div id=\"stcpDiv\" style=\"position: absolute; top: -1999px; left: -1988px;\">Gauteng Finance MEC Barbara Creecy<\/div>\n<p>Gauteng Finance MEC Barbara Creecy says that the Gauteng Broadband Network is expected to yield savings of R162 million per annum, once it\u2019s fully rolled out to the provincial government.<\/p>\n<p>Briefing the media on departmental strategic planning processes ahead of her departmental budget vote in the Gauteng Provincial Legislature on Friday, the MEC said that her department is mandated to bridge the digital divide amongst Gauteng\u2019s citizens.<\/p>\n<p>To this effect, the Gauteng Broadband Network (GBN) has been identified as a key mechanism to bring about a connected government.<\/p>\n<p>This\u00a0 investment in broadband will result in a fibre optic transmission network of 1,600 km across the province, the MEC said, with the network set to connect all provincial government buildings, including regional satellite offices, all Thusong Centres, hospitals, and schools.<\/p>\n<p>Creecy said before the end of this financial year the six core sites will all be connected including Chris Hani Baragwanath Hospital, 75 Fox Street, 82 Grayston Drive, the West Rand District Offices in Randfontein, Teraco, in Kempton Park, for internet, and Telkom for the government Data Centre.<\/p>\n<p>These core sites are distribution nodes from which it will be possible to start connection other government buildings.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_63810\" style=\"width: 610px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a  data-lightbox=\"post-image\" href=\"http:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/Barbara-Creecy.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-63810\" class=\"size-full wp-image-63810\" src=\"http:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/Barbara-Creecy.png\" alt=\"Barbara Creecy\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" srcset=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/Barbara-Creecy.png 600w, https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/Barbara-Creecy-300x200.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-63810\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Barbara Creecy<\/p><\/div>\n<p>\u201cOne of the criteria for judging the success of this project is cost saving.\u00a0 At present the current total spend on the telecommunications bill for the Gauteng Provincial Government\u00a0 is R215,325,984.20, the MEC said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;GBN is expected to yield savings of R162 million per annum, once it\u2019s fully rolled out to the provincial government,\u201d said Creecy.<\/p>\n<p>Part of the modernisation of government services includes the digitisation of back office services.
