South Africa has no shortage of shopping malls, with four new major projects being completed in the country within this past week, opening their doors in the same week.<\/p>\n

A new 28,000 square metre regional mall – Merino Mall – opened its doors in Ermelo on 28 October 2022, featuring its own solar plant to help keep lights on and businesses trading.<\/p>\n

Meanwhile, three others – Mamaila Mall in Limpopo, Matsamo Mall in Mpumalanga, and KwaBhaca Mall in the Eastern Cape – all opened their doors for trade at around exactly the same time.<\/p>\n

Mamaila Mall<\/strong><\/p>\n

Construction of Mamaila Mall kicked off in 2021, with the 12,500 square metre retail development opening its doors to the public on 29 October 2022.<\/p>\n

The project was handled by Pretoria-based development company, GMI Property group, which specialises in rural retail developments.<\/p>\n

The mall is expected to serve over 86,000 people from almost 30,000 households in the catchment area, and has tenants such as Shoprite, OK Furniture, PEP, Cahsbuild, Ackermans and more.<\/p>\n

According to Leads2Business<\/a>, the mall is valued in the region of R30 to R60 million<\/a>.<\/p>\n

KwaBhaca Mall <\/strong><\/p>\n

KwaBhaca Mall is a new addition to Eastern Cape’s mix of shopping centres, having opened in Mount Frere on 28 October.<\/p>\n

The double-level mall covers almost 19,000 square metres, and its tenant mix includes the likes of Woolworths, Shoprite, Boxer, Boxer Liquor, Shoprite Liquor, Capitec, Clicks, Wimpy, TotalSports and Truworths.<\/p>\n

The development is 60% owned by Exemplar REITail, and was built in partnership with AJ Property Holdings.<\/p>\n

According to Leads2Business, the mall is valued at over R200 million<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Matsamo Mall<\/strong><\/p>\n

The smallest of the new malls at 7,600 square metres, Matsamo Mall in Buffelspruit opened its doors on 26 October 2022.<\/p>\n

The mall is a convenient, central retail hub with tenants such as Shoprite, Shoprite Liquor, Ackermans, Mr Price, Jet, Pep Home, Totalsports and Markham.<\/p>\n

According to the Moolman Group, who developed the centre, there is a currently a huge undersupply of retail facilities in the area, with the mall being the only formal retail facility in the region which has more than 26,000 households.<\/p>\n

Merino Mall<\/strong><\/p>\n

Merino Mall is the largest of the new shopping malls launched in the past week, serving as a regional mall in Ermelo. It opened on 28 October.<\/p>\n

At 28,600 square metres, the mall marks the\u00a0first shopping centre of its substantial size to be developed within a 100-kilometre radius in the area.<\/p>\n

Merino Mall\u2019s retail mix comprises 90 stores with anchors Checkers, Pick n Pay, Woolworths and Clicks, as well as the first Crazy Plastics and Dis-Chem in the area. Other retail firsts for Ermelo include Cape Union Mart, PNA, @Home, Queenspark, Old Khaki, Crazy Pets and Refinery.<\/p>\n

The shopping centre also has a fashion node, banking facilities and restaurants – as well as a solar plant to keep businesses operating during load shedding.<\/p>\n
