To get unemployment down, we really need systematic 5% growth every year, and that\u2019s a different debate.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Power outages &#8212; known locally as load shedding &#8212; reached a record this year and are deterring companies from expanding and adding jobs. Rising labour and utility costs spurred Sibanye Stillwater Ltd., South Africa\u2019s second-largest precious-metal miner by sales, to consider <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2022-11-01\/sibanye-weighs-job-cuts-at-some-gold-operations-in-south-africa\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">cutting<\/a>\u00a0about 2,000 jobs at some of its gold mining operations.<\/p>\n<p>The unemployment rate in the continent\u2019s most-industrialized nation is currently 33.9% &#8212; the highest on a list of 82 countries and the eurozone monitored by Bloomberg.<\/p>\n<p><a  data-lightbox=\"post-image\" href=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/392944246.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-640123 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/392944246.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1066\" height=\"600\" srcset=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/392944246.jpg 1066w, https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/392944246-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/392944246-1024x576.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/392944246-768x432.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1066px) 100vw, 1066px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The International Monetary Fund projects the nation\u2019s jobless rate will reach 35.2% this year, the highest in the world, though data for some countries is unavailable.
