{"id":64045,"date":"2014-07-28T08:32:22","date_gmt":"2014-07-28T06:32:22","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/?p=64045"},"modified":"2014-07-28T10:29:05","modified_gmt":"2014-07-28T08:29:05","slug":"telkom-responds-to-ceo-cloning-charge","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/telecommunications\/64045\/telkom-responds-to-ceo-cloning-charge\/","title":{"rendered":"Telkom responds to CEO plate cloning charge"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Telkom is to investigate allegations that its CEO, Sipho Maseko, cloned car licence plates in order to avoid traffic fines.<\/p>\n<p>According to Bloomberg News, Telkom said that the case was \u201cin no way related\u201d to Telkom.<\/p>\n<p>Spokesman, Pynee Chetty, said: \u201cThe company is aware that Mr Maseko has presented himself to the authorities and that he is committed to resolving the issue within the ambit of the law.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTelkom trusts that he will continue to work with the relevant authorities until the matter is resolved and therefore has no further comment on this matter.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Maseko is under investigation after being implicated in an alleged car licence cloning case, the City of Johannesburg said on Friday.<\/p>\n<p>The Star reported that Maseko was driving around using his previous vehicle\u2019s number plates, which were legally being used by businessman Mabena Motshoane, who had purchased Maseko\u2019s old Range Rover.<\/p>\n<p>It reported that Maseko incurred traffic fines totalling R30,000, but that these were sent to Motshoane to pay.<\/p>\n<p>Motshoane came across Maseko\u2019s vehicle using his number plates on a Pretoria freeway by chance.<\/p>\n<p>He opened a case with the metro police, and a case of fraud with the Booysens police station, according to the newspaper.<\/p>\n<p>Metro police officers went to Maseko\u2019s home, but were reportedly denied permission to inspect his vehicle.<\/p>\n<p>According to the newspaper, the officers were later instructed to leave Maseko\u2019s Houghton home after allegedly being told that city manager Trevor Fowler had intervened in the matter. Modigoane denied that Fowler was involved.<\/p>\n<p>A few days later, metro police were allowed to inspect the vehicle, but by then Maseko\u2019s number plates had allegedly been changed.<\/p>\n<p>The Star said it had seen the fines, and photographs and video footage of Maseko driving the car with Motshoane\u2019s number plates.<\/p>\n<p>Maseko told the newspaper he had contacted Fowler.<\/p>\n<p>\u201c\u2026 I was scared and nervous and the only person I could think of was Trevor Fowler.
