Security group Fidelity ADT has warned South Africans to be cautious when having food or groceries delivered to their homes, as it is seeing a rising trend of delivery drivers being targeted by criminals.<\/p>\n
Fidelity said that it has received a swell of reports from communities about residents and delivery drivers being held up outside their homes when collecting deliveries.<\/p>\n
“As a resident goes outside to collect their order, the criminals exit their vehicle, take away the keys from the delivery driver and steal their cell phone,” it said.<\/p>\n
While it is the delivery driver who is most at risk in this situation, Fidelity said that residents are also potentially in harm’s way, especially if they do not take the necessary precautions.<\/p>\n
The group issued an alert to all homeowners to remain vigilant when leaving the safety of their homes to collect food or other deliveries.<\/p>\n
It said it is advisable to carry a portable panic button and press it if there are any concerns to alert armed response.<\/p>\n
“Panic buttons are key,” the group said, adding that residents should have easy access to a button if a crisis arises.<\/p>\n
“It\u2019s no use if panic buttons are put in a cupboard somewhere and forgotten about. They need to be easily accessible, and we recommend that you have them in a pocket or hanging around your neck for quick access. Panic buttons should also be checked regularly to ensure they are in good working condition.”<\/p>\n
The group offered these other safety tips to protect both yourself and the delivery drivers being targetted:<\/p>\n
“It is important to be vigilant when accepting deliveries. If you are expecting deliveries, please be aware of your surroundings and limit the amount of cash you carry \u2013 make sure you have the correct amount on you. Don\u2019t wear expensive jewellery and leave your cell phone in the house,” the group said.<\/p>\n
Fast food risk<\/strong><\/p>\n The fast food sector has become a specific target for criminals and hijackers. On top of home deliveries leaving drivers and residents vulnerable to ambushes, fast food chains themselves have become hunting grounds for hijackers.<\/p>\n In October, Fidelity ADT highlighted a concerning trend where criminals target unsuspecting patrons at drive-thru establishments.<\/p>\n
