{"id":647495,"date":"2022-12-03T09:00:13","date_gmt":"2022-12-03T07:00:13","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/?p=647495"},"modified":"2022-12-02T16:52:14","modified_gmt":"2022-12-02T14:52:14","slug":"what-government-pays-domestic-workers-special-advisors-and-other-support-staff-in-south-africa","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/government\/647495\/what-government-pays-domestic-workers-special-advisors-and-other-support-staff-in-south-africa\/","title":{"rendered":"What government pays domestic workers, &#8216;special advisors&#8217; and other support staff in South Africa"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Department of Mineral Resources and Energy has revealed what support staff working in its private offices earn, including domestic workers, drivers and special advisors to the minister.<\/p>\n<p>Responding in a written parliamentary Q&amp;A this week, the department noted that it pays its support staff anywhere between R170,000 and R1.7 million per year.<\/p>\n<p>The lowest paid, on salary band 3 are domestic workers, who earn close to R170,500 annually. Special advisors, meanwhile, earn on salary band 17 and take home between R1 million and R1.74 million a year.<\/p>\n<p>The second-lowest earners are drivers on salary band 4 &#8211; taking home R202,000 a year, or R16,800 a month &#8211; and secretaries on salary band 5 -taking home R241,500 a year or R20,125 a month.<\/p>\n<p>The table below outlines what government support staff get paid.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-648691\" src=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/Support-staff-salaries.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"658\" height=\"1144\" srcset=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/Support-staff-salaries.png 658w, https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/Support-staff-salaries-173x300.png 173w, https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/Support-staff-salaries-589x1024.png 589w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 658px) 100vw, 658px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>Domestic worker salaries<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>While the document shows that domestic workers are the lowest paid in the department, their annual salary &#8211; at R170,475 or R14,200 per month &#8211; is far higher than the minimum wage required and even higher than what the average domestic worker gets paid in the country.<\/p>\n<p>Since 2022, Domestic worker wages in South Africa are at an <a href=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/trending\/586360\/government-says-south-africans-are-failing-domestic-workers-heres-how-much-you-should-be-paying-them\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">hourly earning rate of 100% the National Minimum Wage<\/a>, which is R23.19 for each ordinary hour worked as of 1 March 2022. Assuming a domestic worker works 160 hours a month (eight hours a day, 20 days a month), the monthly wage comes to R3,710 for the month.<\/p>\n<p>However, a recent survey conducted by SweepSouth found that the median earnings for domestic workers in South Africa are R2,929 per month for women and R2,797 for men \u2013 meaning <strong>domestic workers in government earn almost five times more than those who work in the average South African home<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>This is against the backdrop of declining domestic worker jobs in the country.<\/p>\n<p>The latest data from the Quarterly Labour Force Survey (QLFS) for the third quarter of 2022 shows that they are also facing a rise in unemployment.<\/p>\n<p>Published by Stats SA, the <a href=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/lifestyle\/647301\/bad-news-for-domestic-workers-in-south-africa\/?fbclid=IwAR1rUAcaDOzMAPCkU55hNyOf6ltCzfP3he3lhQ4-U_Jss0xwQGYA90kZu0E\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">survey showed<\/a> that the number of domestic workers in South Africa has decreased by 32,000 in Q3 2022 to 826,000 \u2013 down 3.7% from 858,000 domestic workers in Q2 and 3.5% from Q3 2021.<\/p>\n<p><a  data-lightbox=\"post-image\" href=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/Domestic-workers-in-South-Africa-5-years.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-647303\" src=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/Domestic-workers-in-South-Africa-5-years.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"964\" height=\"602\" srcset=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/Domestic-workers-in-South-Africa-5-years.png 964w, https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/Domestic-workers-in-South-Africa-5-years-300x187.png 300w, https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/Domestic-workers-in-South-Africa-5-years-768x480.png 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 964px) 100vw, 964px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>These numbers indicate the strain households \u2013 mainly middle-class households \u2013 are under in South Africa, as domestic help is often cited as one of the first expenses cut during times of financial pressure.<\/p>\n<p>Another reason for the decline in domestic workers is the emigration and semigration of their employers.<\/p>\n<p>Data from a SweepSouth survey in August 2022 found that more than a quarter (28%) of domestic workers said they lost their job because their employer had moved: 33% of the employers moved to a different town or city in South Africa, while nearly half (48%) moved to another country.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><strong>Read: <a href=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/government\/647193\/good-news-for-south-africas-unemployment-rate-2\/\" rel=\"bookmark\">Good news for South Africa\u2019s unemployment rate<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Domestic workers in government earn five times more than the average domestic worker in a private household. <\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":10,"featured_media":647511,"comment_status":"closed","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[23],"tags":[26],"class_list":["post-647495","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-government","tag-headline"],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/647495","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/10"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=647495"}],"version-history":[{"count":9,"href":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/647495\/revisions"}],"predecessor-version":[{"id":648699,"href":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/647495\/revisions\/648699"}],"wp:featuredmedia":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media\/647511"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=647495"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=647495"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=647495"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
