{"id":648853,"date":"2022-12-05T07:49:13","date_gmt":"2022-12-05T05:49:13","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/?p=648853"},"modified":"2022-12-05T07:49:13","modified_gmt":"2022-12-05T05:49:13","slug":"germany-eyes-a-piece-of-south-africas-new-energy-gold-rush","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/energy\/648853\/germany-eyes-a-piece-of-south-africas-new-energy-gold-rush\/","title":{"rendered":"Germany eyes a piece of South Africa&#8217;s new energy &#8216;gold rush&#8217;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>German Economy Minister Robert Habeck began a five-day trip to Namibia and South Africa Sunday, part of a push to secure new energy resources for Europe\u2019s biggest economy to compensate for the cut-off from Russian gas supplies.<\/p>\n<p>During his first stop in the Namibian capital Windhoek, Habeck, who\u2019ll be accompanied by a delegation of 24 German business leaders, will sign an agreement on the production of green hydrogen.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNamibia has very great advantages in terms of location compared to Europe,\u201d Habeck told reporters before flying out of Berlin. Namibia\u2019s Skeleton Coast on the Atlantic Ocean is ideal for green-hydrogen production due to an abundance of sun and wind, he added.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\">Green <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/ammonia?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#ammonia<\/a> is a crucial part of efforts in <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/Germany?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#Germany<\/a> to use <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/hydrogen?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#hydrogen<\/a> to combat climate change. The German government has just commissioned the country&#8217;s first terminal to receive ammonia imports from Saudi Arabia. More\ud83d\udc47<a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/TMZWionUxr\">https:\/\/t.co\/TMZWionUxr<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Germany Trade &amp; Invest (@GTAI_com) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/GTAI_com\/status\/1593615954356981761?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">November 18, 2022<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p>Germany\u2019s RWE and consortium Hyphen Hydrogen Energy recently signed a memorandum that could see RWE offtake up to 300,000 tons per year of green ammonia, a hydrogen derivative that is particularly suitable for transport by ship.<\/p>\n<p>Later this week, Habeck will attend the German-African Business Summit in Johannesburg together with South African President Cyril Ramaphosa, who has come under political pressure following allegations of corruption.<\/p>\n<p>Habeck\u2019s Africa visit is part of a wider German government mission to establish new energy alliances abroad after Russia cut off its gas supplies in September. Habeck has also recently travelled to Canada, Qatar and Norway in an attempt to secure LNG resources.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA green energy transition, security of supply and reliable value chains are also key issues in Africa,\u201d according to Fausi Najjar at Germany Trade &amp; Invest, a government agency that promotes German companies abroad.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn particular, the desire for more diversified supply chains is leading to greater interest on the part of German companies in African markets,\u201d Najjar added.<\/p>\n<p>More than 400 German companies, including in the auto, medical technology and energy sectors, operate in South Africa and employ more than 65,000 people, GTAI figures show.
