The revelation was very late, with the attempt taking place in August, but the media and South Africans only found out in the past week. The minister said that the local security cluster had no idea and only found out about it after being alerted to it by the US’ Federal Bureau for Investigation (FBI). The SANDF said that the army would be working to support the SAPS in protecting the power stations from theft, vandalism, sabotage, and other acts of criminality. There are currently vacant positions in the cabinet, and transport minister Fikile Mbalula is moving to a full-time position of secretary general at Luthuli House, meaning ministers will have to move around. It is also an opportunity to get rid of cabinet members who actively sought to bring Ramaphosa down. For a second time in a row, the province’s preferred candidate has lost at the conference, and only two names it put forward (Paul Mashatile and Nomvula Mokonyane) made it into the top 7 – but only with support from other provinces and interest groups. The currency is still influenced by global markets, however, with further interest rate hikes adding pressure. On Tuesday, the rand was trading at R17.44\/$, R18.47\/\u20ac and R21.12\/\u00a3.
