This is not illegal,” said DA National Spokesperson, Marius Redelinghuys.

“The DA is however concerned that state officials are being directly or indirectly coerced into making contributions to the ANC,” he said.

Reports alleged that several government officials confirmed that they had been asked to help to make financial contributions to the ANC. Directors-General, who are the administrative heads of government departments, were asked to contribute a minimum of R3,700 a month.

Anonymous sources were quoted saying that they did not know what would happen if they refused. “Some state employees clearly feel that if they do not make the contributions, their jobs could be in jeopardy,” the DA said.

“It would be highly problematic if the ANC were pressuring state officials for donations. It would be akin to a ‘pay-for-jobs’ situation,” the political party said.

It argued that no state official’s employment should be compromised if they decide not to contribute to the ANC.

“This is not entirely surprising. Given the ANC loss in electoral support in the last election, and the resulting reduction in funding the party receives, it is not surprising that the party is struggling to make ends meet,” Redelinghuys said.

The ANC, however has rejected the coercion claims.

“The African National Congress categorically rejects any attempt to link voluntary and unconditional financial contributions by members, supporters, and sympathisers of the ANC to the acquisition or retention of any jobs in the public sector,” the party said in a statement last week.

“Donations to the ANC are not transactional. Anyone who contributes to the organisation cannot expect anything, nor do they contribute in exchange of anything.”

At the end of last month, the ANC said that it is seeking an overhaul of the model on which support funding is given to political parties in Parliament, saying the ruling party found itself facing severe constraints.

More on the DA and the ANC

ANC wants more money

ANC government driven by mad things: analyst

DA to have day in court with SABC’s Motsoeneng

The DA says it will write to the PSC to request an investigation into the ANC’s alleged requests for contributions from state employees to party funds.

[23
1875,1329,26
post-65552","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-government","tag-anc","tag-da","tag-headline
["GET
