{"id":657047,"date":"2023-01-17T17:04:16","date_gmt":"2023-01-17T15:04:16","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/?p=657047"},"modified":"2023-01-17T17:04:16","modified_gmt":"2023-01-17T15:04:16","slug":"more-than-1400-people-died-on-south-africas-roads-over-the-festive-season","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/motoring\/657047\/more-than-1400-people-died-on-south-africas-roads-over-the-festive-season\/","title":{"rendered":"More than 1,400 people died on South Africa&#8217;s roads over the festive season"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Data from the Road Traffic Management Corporation (RTMC) shows that 1,451 people died on South Africa&#8217;s roads during the 2022\/23 festive period &#8211; a 13.9% decrease in road fatalities from the previous year (1,685).<\/p>\n<p>The South African festive season began on 1 December and ended on 11 January. One example occurred in Pretoria, where three children were killed by a driver who <a href=\"https:\/\/www.timeslive.co.za\/news\/south-africa\/2023-01-08-three-children-killed-as-bmw-driver-ploughs-into-several-people-in-pretoria\/\">fled the scene.\u00a0<\/a><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>Driver fatalities decreased from 28% to 27%, while passenger fatalities were down to 31% from 38%.<\/p>\n<p>Cyclist fatalities also decreased slightly, from 3% to 2%.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Ways to tackle the issue<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The RMTC said that road users should be cognisant of the fact that roads are a shared space, and that motorists, in particular, should look out for cyclists and pedestrians while travelling.<\/p>\n<p>Moreover, it repeated the message that road users should buckle up while travelling in a vehicle.<\/p>\n<p>2021 data published by <a href=\"https:\/\/zutobi.com\/us\/the-worlds-safest-roads\">Zutobi<\/a> &#8211; gathered from the World Health Organisation (WHO) &#8211; shows that South Africa only had a 31% seat-belt wearing rate, which was incredibly low.<\/p>\n<p>Speed enforcement is another way to reduce road accidents.<\/p>\n<p>Gauteng recorded the most road deaths, but the speed cameras in Johannesburg and Tshwane only came back online on<a href=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/motoring\/653749\/speed-cameras-back-online-in-johannesburg-and-tshwane-and-so-are-fines\/\">\u00a01 January 2023<\/a> &#8211; the final stages of the festive season.<\/p>\n<p>According to an<a href=\"https:\/\/www.arrivealive.mobi\/science-speed-camera-enforcement#:~:text=The%20study%20monitored%20the%20number,risk%20was%20reduced%20by%2041%25.\"> Arrive Alive report<\/a>, the fatality risk reduces by 41% in areas with high levels of speed enforcement.<\/p>\n<p>Finally, as per Zutobi&#8217;s 2021 report, 57.5% of road deaths in South Africa were alcohol-related, which was by far the highest number in the study &#8211; Ireland comes in second with 39%.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/dgmt.co.za\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/Policy-options-to-reduce-binge-drinking-in-South-Africa-final-digital-rev.pdf\">The WHO<\/a> has recommended numerous options to reduce South Africa&#8217;s alcohol-related vehicle deaths &#8211; such as increasing random breath testing in high-risk areas, imposing bans on the sale of alcohol on premises near major roads like petrol stations, and introducing alcohol interlocks which force convicted drunk drivers to provide a breath sample to start a car.<\/p>\n<div class=\"bt_table\">\n<hr \/>\n<p><strong>Read: <a href=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/lifestyle\/655315\/the-cars-you-can-afford-with-your-salary-in-south-africa-at-the-start-of-2023\/\">The cars you can afford with your salary in South Africa at the start of 2023<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>South Africa saw a decrease in road deaths compared to the previous festive season. <\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":10,"featured_media":651557,"comment_status":"closed","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[11119],"tags":[26],"class_list":["post-657047","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-motoring","tag-headline"],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/657047","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/10"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=657047"}],"version-history":[{"count":6,"href":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/657047\/revisions"}],"predecessor-version":[{"id":657107,"href":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/657047\/revisions\/657107"}],"wp:featuredmedia":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media\/651557"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=657047"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=657047"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=657047"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
