{"id":66406,"date":"2014-08-22T00:05:34","date_gmt":"2014-08-21T22:05:34","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/?p=66406"},"modified":"2014-08-21T17:56:05","modified_gmt":"2014-08-21T15:56:05","slug":"morality-sa-vs-the-world","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/trending\/66406\/morality-sa-vs-the-world\/","title":{"rendered":"Morality in SA vs the world"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>While South Africans are morally accepting of gambling and consuming alcohol, they take exception to any actions that may upset traditional values of marriage.<\/p>\n<p>These are the findings of a new study conducted by Pew Research Centre, looking at global views on topics of morality.<\/p>\n<p>The Pew Research Center\u2019s 2013 Global Attitudes survey asked 40,117 respondents in 40 countries what they thought about eight topics often discussed as moral issues:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Extramarital affairs;<\/li>\n<li>Gambling;<\/li>\n<li>Homosexuality;<\/li>\n<li>Abortion;<\/li>\n<li>Premarital sex;<\/li>\n<li>Alcohol consumption;<\/li>\n<li>Divorce; and<\/li>\n<li>The use of contraceptives.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>For each topic, respondents were asked whether this is morally acceptable, morally unacceptable, or not a moral issue.<\/p>\n<p>In South Africa, the survey questioned 815 participants in face-to-face interviews from a racially diverse group of adults, aged 18 and older.<\/p>\n<p>Pew Research&#8217;s data shows that, for most of the topics covered, South Africans still hold very conservative views.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_66408\" style=\"width: 610px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a  data-lightbox=\"post-image\" href=\"http:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/Conservative-views.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-66408\" class=\"wp-image-66408\" src=\"http:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/Conservative-views.jpg\" alt=\"Conservative views\" width=\"600\" height=\"245\" srcset=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/Conservative-views.jpg 726w, https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/Conservative-views-300x122.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-66408\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">South Africa&#8217;s moral views<\/p><\/div>\n<p>The South Africans interviewed showed strong moral objection to extramarital affairs (65%), homosexuality (62%) and abortion (61%).<\/p>\n<p>While facing disapproval to a lesser degree, the respondents also took moral opposition to premarital sex (48%), and divorce (40%).<\/p>\n<p>Respondents who viewed issues as acceptable or as not being a moral issue outweighed the naysayers in terms of gambling (45% were okay with it), alcohol use (47%) and a vast majority said contraceptives were acceptable (77%).<\/p>\n<p>Worryingly, however, 15% of the respondents still thought contraceptives were immoral.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"my-4\">Global morality<\/h3>\n<p>Compared to the global view, South Africa falls in line with what is a generally conservative stance on many issues, though has a more liberal view on gambling, and a greater moral objection to divorce.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_66410\" style=\"width: 610px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a  data-lightbox=\"post-image\" href=\"http:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/Median-views.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-66410\" class=\"wp-image-66410\" src=\"http:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/Median-views.jpg\" alt=\"Median views\" width=\"600\" height=\"323\" srcset=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/Median-views.jpg 720w, https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/Median-views-300x161.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-66410\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Global median views<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Overall, European nations such as France, Spain and Germany are the most morally liberal on the aforementioned issues, with France being the most accepting on the most points.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Generally, affairs, gambling, homosexuality, and abortion are deemed unacceptable by the largest number of respondents. Many also consider premarital sex and alcohol use unacceptable,&#8221; Pew said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Meanwhile, contraceptives and divorce are seen as acceptable by the greatest number of
