{"id":669343,"date":"2023-03-01T15:14:26","date_gmt":"2023-03-01T13:14:26","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/?p=669343"},"modified":"2023-03-01T15:14:26","modified_gmt":"2023-03-01T13:14:26","slug":"another-blow-for-businesses-in-south-africa","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/business\/669343\/another-blow-for-businesses-in-south-africa\/","title":{"rendered":"Another blow for businesses in South Africa"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Despite improvements in January, the Purchasing Managers\u2019 Index (PMI) fell sharply in February.<\/p>\n<p>The index is based on surveys with purchasing managers in the country\u2019s manufacturing sector, with managers providing monthly insights into their businesses.<\/p>\n<p>Absa then processes all the data to create an index, with 50 representing stability, higher values indicating increased activity, and lower levels meaning decreased activity.<\/p>\n<p>The PMI dropped from 53.0 index points in January to 48.8 in February &#8211; the first time the headline index fell below the neutral 50-point mark since September 2022.<\/p>\n<p>This showed a serious deterioration in business conditions &#8211; within the factory sector in particular.<\/p>\n<p>February contained an unprecedented seven days of stage 6 load shedding, with many managers including it in their commentary over why activity declined from the previous month.<\/p>\n<p>The business activity and new sales order indices both contracted, with demand dropping for the second month in a row.<\/p>\n<p>Absa recorded the following <strong>business activity<\/strong> metrics:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>December: 45.2<\/li>\n<li>January: 56.0<\/li>\n<li>February: 45.5<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><a  data-lightbox=\"post-image\" href=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/pmi-business-activ-feb-2023.jpg\"><br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-669357 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/pmi-business-activ-feb-2023.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"640\" height=\"430\" srcset=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/pmi-business-activ-feb-2023.jpg 640w, https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/pmi-business-activ-feb-2023-300x202.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The new sales order index dropped to its lowest level since October 2022, declining from 49.9 in January to 49.4 in February.<\/p>\n<p>Although the February statistics mainly provided negative news, export sales grew to the best level in a year.
