{"id":669719,"date":"2023-03-06T09:35:43","date_gmt":"2023-03-06T07:35:43","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/?p=669719"},"modified":"2023-03-07T07:12:25","modified_gmt":"2023-03-07T05:12:25","slug":"new-branch-to-get-your-smart-id-and-passport-in-south-africa-launches-today","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/banking\/669719\/new-branch-to-get-your-smart-id-and-passport-in-south-africa-launches-today\/","title":{"rendered":"New branch to get your Smart ID and passport in South Africa launches today &#8211; more coming soon"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Home affairs minister Aaron Motsoaledi will officially open a new home affairs office at the Menlyn Shopping Centre on Monday (6 March).<\/p>\n<p>According to Motsoaledi, the new office will offer application and collections services for IDs and passports.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Home Affairs Menlyn Office is expected to take off pressure from high-volume offices around Tshwane, such as Byron&#8217;s Place in the city centre of Mamelodi and Centurion,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Clients will have the convenience of applying for these services when they visit the centre for their shopping.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>During his response to the State of the Nation Address on <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/government\/665665\/new-branches-where-you-can-get-your-passport-and-smart-id-in-south-africa\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">17 February<\/a><\/strong>, home affairs minister Motsoaledi said that people would soon be able to get their passports and smart IDs at select malls.<\/p>\n<p>Cresta Mall in Johannesburg, the Pavillion in eThekwini and Tygervalley in Cape Town are expected to receive home affairs offices next.<\/p>\n<p>Motsoaledi said that the developments in these malls should be finished by 1 April 2023.<\/p>\n<p>Regarding bank branches offering similar administrative services, the department expects to roll out home affairs services to 43 new branches, once arrangements and agreements with the country&#8217;s various banks are resolved.<\/p>\n<p>The minister said at the end of 2022 that these arrangements are expected to be concluded by the end of the current financial year (end of March 2023).<\/p>\n<p>First National Bank (FNB) recently reported that it has seen an increase in the number of customers using home affairs in bank branches for identification documents (ID) and passport applications.<\/p>\n<p>In its interim results for the six months ending December 2022 on Thursday (2 March), the group reported that it had over 184,000 ID applications and 220,000 passport applications.<\/p>\n<p>Going to a bank instead of a traditional home affairs branch in South Africa can often lead to faster and more convenient administration processes.<\/p>\n<p>The push toward becoming a widespread financial service beyond the normal banking framework forms part of its strategy underpinned by providing innovative products.<\/p>\n<p>FNB is not alone in providing these extended services; Discovery, Investec, Standard Bank, Nedbank and Absa also offer Home Affairs services, and many of them are considering expanding them across more branches.<\/p>\n<p>Home Affairs is notorious in South Africa for its long lines and even longer wait times.<\/p>\n<p>Regarding current bank branches and shopping malls that offer services, DHA provided the following list:<\/p>\n<p><em>(Note: Before visiting one of these branches, please contact them beforehand as branches may close or only offer one service rather than the other.
