{"id":670681,"date":"2023-03-07T07:51:03","date_gmt":"2023-03-07T05:51:03","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/?p=670681"},"modified":"2023-03-07T07:51:03","modified_gmt":"2023-03-07T05:51:03","slug":"electric-vehicle-sales-see-massive-growth","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/motoring\/670681\/electric-vehicle-sales-see-massive-growth\/","title":{"rendered":"Electric vehicle sales see massive growth"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Electric vehicle (EV) sales grew globally by 53% year-on-year to total over 10.2 million units in 2022.<\/p>\n<p>According to Counterpoint&#8217;s\u00a0Global Passenger Electric Vehicle Model Sales Tracker, battery EVs totalled 72% of all EV sales, while plug-in-hybrid EVs (PHEVS) accounted for the rest during Q4 2022.<\/p>\n<p>Research Analyst Abhik Mukherjee said that EV sales reached an all-time high in Q4 2022 and that the total annual sales could have hit 11 million if China did not suffer a wave of Covid-19 infections at the end of the year.<\/p>\n<p>Despite China&#8217;s difficult situation in 2022, Chinese brands still managed to record strong growth, with many expanding into Europe, Southeast Asia and Latin America.<\/p>\n<p>Chinese Manufacturer BYD had the largest sales share for Q4 2022 (19.8%), with Elon Musk&#8217;s Tesla in second (12.1%).<\/p>\n<p><a  data-lightbox=\"post-image\" href=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/best-sellign-evs-q4-2022.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-670689 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/best-sellign-evs-q4-2022.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1200\" height=\"800\" srcset=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/best-sellign-evs-q4-2022.jpg 1200w, https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/best-sellign-evs-q4-2022-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/best-sellign-evs-q4-2022-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/best-sellign-evs-q4-2022-768x512.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1200px) 100vw, 1200px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>However, Tesla&#8217;s Model Y was the best-selling EV globally, followed by the BYD Song.<\/p>\n<p>BYD and Wuling had seven of the ten best-selling EV models in Q4 2022, highlighting China&#8217;s EV adoption.<\/p>\n<p><a  data-lightbox=\"post-image\" href=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/best-selling-evs-11.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-670693 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/best-selling-evs-11.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"640\" height=\"430\" srcset=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/best-selling-evs-11.jpg 640w, https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/best-selling-evs-11-300x202.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><\/a>Counterpoint said EVs are expected to reach nearly 17 million units in 2023.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;This year, the US EV sales will see a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.counterpointresearch.com\/us-ev-sales-q3-2022\/\">boost<\/a> as models become slightly more affordable due to the $7,500 tax credit. The end of the purchase subsidy in China might push EV manufacturers to increase their prices&#8230; But these price hikes are unlikely to affect EV sales in one of the most matured EV markets.&#8221; senior analyst Soumen Mandal said.<\/p>\n<p>Lithium prices are also expected to decline in the second half of 2023, benefiting EVs.<\/p>\n<p><strong>South Africa&#8217;s EV Market\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>South Africa&#8217;s electric vehicle market had a solid start to <a href=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/motoring\/661995\/all-the-full-electric-cars-you-can-buy-in-south-africa-with-pricing\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">2022<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;In the first three months of 2022, South Africa sold over 1,400 electric vehicles.
