South Africa faces an energy crisis, affecting both road and air travel.<\/p>\n

Easter weekend – a highly popular holiday time – is fast approaching, with many South Africans facing high fuel prices ahead of potential travel.<\/p>\n

Currently, the inland price for 95 petrol for April stands at R22.97<\/a> – an increase of 2 cents per litre from March.<\/p>\n

However, the energy crisis has affected airlines as well, with the price of jet fuel increasing globally over the last year, pushing up airline costs.<\/p>\n

South African airlines received another blow In February <\/a>when the Department of Transport gazetted price hikes for the use of airport facilities.<\/p>\n

The changes included fee hikes for parking, landing and passenger services \u2013 the last having an immediate impact on ticket prices.<\/p>\n

South African travellers are thus faced with high costs for both road and air travel.<\/p>\n

BusinessTech looked at the price of a round trip from Johannesburg to Cape Town with the most popular cars per vehicle type (prices sourced from TopAuto<\/a>. Prices also include fees)<\/p>\n

On average, it costs over just over R4,500 to drive a return trip from Johannesburg to Cape Town.<\/p>\n

However, many South Africans may choose to make a single trip over two days, stopping on the roughly 15-hour journey to rest, adding additional costs.<\/p>\n

The advantage of air travel is that it only takes a few hours and does not require a rest.<\/p>\n

Below are the prices per airline for a round trip from Johannesburg to Cape Town for a holiday during the easter weekend.*<\/p>\n

On average, road travel is slightly more expensive than flying, sitting at averages of R4,506 and R4,037, respectively.<\/p>\n

However, travelling by car for a family of four will carry a similar cost for road travel for one person.<\/p>\n

Air travel also gets significantly more expensive when more than one passenger is considered.<\/p>\n

Although the family of four may have to rest on both journeys, the total spent on accommodation would have to total roughly R10 thousand to match the approximately R16,000 price of plane tickets for a family of four.<\/p>\n

Ultimately, a larger group of travellers will save more money driving instead of flying, but air travel costs slightly less for an individual traveller.<\/p>\n
