{"id":671071,"date":"2023-03-08T07:17:06","date_gmt":"2023-03-08T05:17:06","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/?p=671071"},"modified":"2023-03-08T07:44:55","modified_gmt":"2023-03-08T05:44:55","slug":"headwinds-for-south-africas-floating-power-plants","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/energy\/671071\/headwinds-for-south-africas-floating-power-plants\/","title":{"rendered":"Power ships in South Africa hit another roadblock"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Karpowership, the Turkish company seeking to supply 1,220 megawatts of electricity to South Africa, had one of three appeals against adverse environmental rulings rejected, a person with knowledge of the matter said, potentially delaying a solution to the country\u2019s power crisis.<\/p>\n<p>The Department of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment rejected the appeal to moor a ship-mounted power plant capable of generating about 450 megawatts at the Coega harbour in the Eastern Cape province, the person said.<\/p>\n<p>Decisions on plants planned at the Saldanha and Richards Bay harbours have yet to be communicated to the company, the person said, asking not to be identified because the government hasn\u2019t made the information public.<\/p>\n<p>The ruling complicates the South African government\u2019s attempts to tackle the nation\u2019s worst power crisis yet, with a shortage of generation capacity causing rotational blackouts of as many as 12 hours a day.<\/p>\n<p>The Turkish company won a tender in March 2021 to supply the electricity but has since been mired in lawsuits and environmental challenges.<\/p>\n<p>Albi Modise, a spokesman for the ministry, said he couldn\u2019t comment, while a spokeswoman for Karpowership didn\u2019t immediately respond to a request for comment.<\/p>\n<p>While Energy Minister Gwede Mantashe has repeatedly said Karpowership should be allowed to proceed with its plans, Environment Minister Barbara Creecy has said the power crisis won\u2019t see environmental concerns disregarded.<\/p>\n<p>South Africa has suffered intermittent blackouts since 2008, which is now becoming a key political issue ahead of next year\u2019s elections.<\/p>\n<p>Opinion polls indicate that the ruling African National Congress may lose its majority for the first time since taking power in 1994.<\/p>\n<p>The Green Connection, an environmental nonprofit, also challenged the appeal on the Saldanha decision.
